Wonder if you know the answer for that question.

You don't need to get your passport stamped. You do NEED to show your passport at the interview, though. Generally, you must submit your old passport to get the new one produced, so, if something happened and you didnt get the new one by the time you have your interview, that would be a big problem. Hold on to your current passport, its too important for the interview.

First, you will need to show the passport with which you entered the United States the last time, "were admitted." The I.O. will want to see the visa, the entry stamp, and the I-94, so don't do anything funny now. You won't be leaving the U.S. anytime soon anyway, so just relax and wait for the AoS interview.

Another potential issue is that not every consulate will issue you a new passport easily. To use Tanja's case, the Krauts in Los Angeles will not issue a new German passport without either a Green Card or proof that the applicant has not become a US citizen. That can only be accomplished by means of the Freedom of Information act, and that takes time. All other applicants, "non-residents," will only get travel papers instead of a new passport. To the best of my knowledge, the Austrians have a similar policy in place and you can expect any country where somebody would automatically lose their original citizenship(s) when becoming an American to have similar safeguards in place to prevent somebody to get a new passport when they are not even a citizen of that country anymore.

So, again, take this one step at a time. It's not a race.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

I took along my expired old passport that had the visa in it (and I-94) and I took my new passport as well that had nothing in it. IO looked at my visa in my old passport and never even asked if I have any new ones that hasn't expired yet or anything...and I did not get any stamp neither into the new passport, nor the old passport...and in terms of applying for my new passport (but as Brother Hesekiel says, this varies by countries) I just needed my nationality's governmental ID. Good luck!

He got confused when he said "Krauts", he meant to say German citizens! ;)

Hello,

Since you have just completed the interview not long ago, you probably remember of the tax return requirements. I have gotten my Interview appoitment letter which says they need" Federal Income Tax returns and W-2's or certified IRS printouts." Which one you really need it to show for them??? When I file in December 2012, I have sent my husband 2011 year online (Turbotax) Federal taxreturn print out. They were fine with the printout without certification. The appoitment is in a month from today, dont now how gonna get them the offical certified taxreturn for sure by the appoitment. Let me know which one did you need it for your interview...I would greatly appreciate your answer.Thank you in advance

Hello bordeauxo19999:

So what we did, we took W-2s for the last three years, and also copies of our tax returns from the last three years. My husband was able to sponsor me fully, but I decided to take along my stuff, in case they want to take a look at them. I did not have "certified IRS printouts" I just had copies of my 1040EZ forms from each year as I always make a copy of what I mail in, so that's what I brought along. Luckily, my husband is the same way, so he also had his copies of 1040s so we took those from the last three years, along with the W-2's. We also both obtained a letter from our employers that verifies that we're still working at our work places, and how much we get as a rate/month. And which one I needed to show to them...NONE of it! Not even mine stuff, not even my husband's stuff. Seriously. It was funny. The IO only asked for our passports, for our Driver's license (we had separate address on it too), and our photo album. And that was all she has asked to show. We took boatloads of stuff, but the IO have asked none of it. Verbally, the IO asked "when did you guys first meet? How you guys met? How long you guys have been dating? Are we living together?" We told her we met in 2007 online, and we were friends until 2010, just hanging out at weekends sometimes, then we started dating in 2010. And no, we did not live together before, and not even now due to me being in school still, I cannot move and he is working somewhere else. There were no frowns from the IO, they understand that you guys might not live together for a legitimate reason. She approved us on the spot, and a week later I had my GC waiting for me in the mail by the time I got home. Good luck, I'm sure you guys will do awesome! Fingers crossed for you! :)

While transcripts are preferable, copies of 1040 and w-2s are fine too. I took all those with me but IO didn't ask for it. He did want to see my (and my wife's) passport and DL (I guess for address). He didn't even want the I-94 either. Good luck.
