Car Insurance

I'm not happy with my car insurance. When my daughter graduated from college I went to drop her and her car from my insurance. Getting my agent to do that was like pulling teeth. I finally got forceful and he dropped her. My monthly payments went from almost $300 to $110. The policy renewed Oct 2012. My Oct bill was $180. I went to the office and the secretary told me because the policy renewed it was "fees" and that it was only for the first month of the policy. I got my Nov bill and it was, again, $180. I emailed my agent who didn't reply back. I called and he said he had not emailed back because he was "looking into it" and would "fix it". It's Nov 14 and my payment is due Nov 16. I'm disgruntled. This isn't the only time my agent pissed me off regarding dropping someone from my insurance (ex husband...long story and that took THREE years of repeating over and over DROP HIM from MY insurance). I've been with the same agent sinc e '95 and was being loyal. It's become a hassle being loyal. lol

Anyway, I got an email from my credit union last week offering members to get a free quote. I filled out the form and got my quote today. The reply says it's easy to apply and place their coverage in force. I have to fill out the form and fax it. Do I do that and just not pay my Nov. bill to the "old" insurance? How does this work. I've never changed auto insurance companies before.

Thank in advance,

Shal

First make sure that you get coverage from the new insurance company. If you are intent on changing companies, sign up with the insurance company you believe fits your needs and ask them when does your policy start. Normally it should start either immediately upon payment or in some rare cases, at 12:00 noon of the day - or next day - when the policy goes into effect. Once that is done, call your current insurance company and request that your policy be cancelled as of the moment the new insurance kicks in. Not only do that over the phone, but also, fax them a letter requesting cancellation of your policy, make sure to indicate your name and policy number. Keep a copy of the fax in the event they forget to cancel the policy and send you another bill next month.

It is not that complicated, but make sure you coordinate the dates and times correctly to avoid operating your vehicle while uninsured.

The first thing you do is get the new car insurance in place. Once you have confirmation of the new car insurance, then I would cancel the old insurance. It's important to cancel the old insurance, or you could be held liable for the insurance premiums even if you don't pay (think of it this way, how would they know not to cover you unless you tell them).
