Just a quick question as I was curious. Once I move over I'll be living in Navarre, FL. If anyone knows where this is then they will know its somewhere you definitely need to be able to drive in order to...survive. Were after buying a place together but it still has to be close to the Air Force base my fiance is based at. How soon can I take a Florida driving test and get my licence (If I pass) or can I use my full UK Driving Licence (up to a year I heard) until I go in for my US test?

I am 22 (will be 23 when I move) and I have been driving for 4 years.

Any help would be appreciated!

You need to check out the FL DMV site here. If it is like Colorado, you can drive on your UK license until you become a FL resident then you have 30 days to get a CO DL. Colorado defines a resident as someone who has lived in the state for 90 consecutive days or who has accepted gainful employment. So if you are not working, it will take 90 days to become a resident and then you have 30 days to get a CO DL. So you could drive for 129 days on your UK DL in CO. Please read the link I provided for FL specific information. You will most likely need your GC, SSN, and proof of FL residence (like mail addressed to you or car regeristration) in order to get a FL DL.

Good luck,

Dave

I don't know about your state, in Minnesota I had to get the license within 90 days after becoming a resident, though I have my international license. They told that I may get a ticket driving with my old one. To pass a test is easy, just read the rules, pass the written and driving test. For me to pass a written test was quick and easy, unfortunately before driving test we should wait for 2 months (too many people), but if you drove a car before it won't be a problem for you.

The link Dave&Roza provided is not the official Florida DMV site. This is: http://www.flhsmv.gov/html/dlnew.html

I would recommend using the official state government information. Take notice to the FL requirements on establishing legal presence in the US.

Just know that you will not be able to work legally until you submit the Adjustment of Status paperwork along with the Employment Authorization Document (EAD) request. The EAD arrives sooner than the green card, but you'll need one or the other to work in the US.

I am aware that I wouldn't be able to work legally until I submitted my AOS paperwork and employment etc but I'm just trying to understand it all :) with my fiance serving in afghanistan its harder to talk to each other about all the finer things but were getting there haha

Thanks LeftCoastLady :)
