It is about religious beliefs. When asked why they could not terminate the pregnancy to save the life of the mother, even though she knew she was micarrying the child, the reason they were given is "this is a Catholic country."

Did you even read the article?

It's the law. I can say that we outlaw murder in the US because we are a Protestant country, but that doesn't make the criminality of murder a religious issue.

I definitely feel like there is another side to this story. I imagine a lot of things were said over the course of the three days. Many of them could be taken out of context. The doctors likely felt that their was a chance to save both the mother and the baby.

Two investigations are under way into the death of a woman who was 17 weeks pregnant, at University Hospital Galway last month.

Savita Halappanavar (31), a dentist, presented with back pain at the hospital on October 21st, was found to be miscarrying, and died of septicaemia a week later.

Her husband, Praveen Halappanavar (34), an engineer at Boston Scientific in Galway, says she asked several times over a three-day period that the pregnancy be terminated. He says that, having been told she was miscarrying, and after one day in severe pain, Ms Halappanavar asked for a medical termination.

She spent a further 2½ days “in agony” until the foetal heartbeat stopped.

Speaking from Belgaum in the Karnataka region of southwest India, Mr Halappanavar said an internal examination was performed when she first presented.

“The doctor told us the cervix was fully dilated, amniotic fluid was leaking and unfortunately the baby wouldn’t survive.” The doctor, he says, said it should be over in a few hours. There followed three days, he says, of the foetal heartbeat being checked several times a day.

“Savita was really in agony. She was very upset, but she accepted she was losing the baby.

So which part of this justifies the death of the mother?

... the hypocritical perspective of this church.

It is not justifiable.

abortion is legal in ireland. if it is performed to save the mothers life.

so, we have a dumbass making the call to not provide the procedure at the hospital. a dumbass husband for not demanding it and/or getting his wife to another location. several dumbasses blaming religion in this thread.

Religion was the reason, according to the story, they were given for not performing the procedure. So if the story happened the way it's presented in this story, then it is partly to blame. Religion is sadly a driving force as to why people will or will not do things - good or bad. I would hate to see anyone else's religious beliefs negatively impact MY life. Especially somewhere like a hospital.

only because you & the author of the story want it to be. the law allows for an abortion to be performed in this case. its on the hospital, for not providing the service.

Another example of why religious beliefs should have no power to dictate the care someone receives.

There is no case on record of a baby surviving delivery at 20 weeks gestation. If you actually saw this happen, then you witnessed a miracle, and also, unfortunately, one that was not recorded in the medical literature anywhere.

I'm sure you'll tell me the 1 week and 5 days makes a huge difference but: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1380282/Earliest-surviving-premature-baby-goes-home-parents.html
