Employer couldn't verify my SSN. Has this happened to you?

I am in the US on a CR-1, so I have been allowed to work since I crossed the border. I got my SSN in July.

I got a job after a great interview at Target (hey, it's better than nothing.) They sent out my information for background checks and the like. That was on Nov 5. On the 6th I went to do my drug test. I was told at the end of my interview that I would get an e-mail and a phone call to arrange my orientation once all the checks were done. Perfect, awesome.

Days go by and I haven't heard anything yet, but I was patient. Yesterday, I got a letter from Target HR along with a copy of the Lexis Nexis report saying my SSN could not be verified because: It was either never issued or it was issued after June 2011.

The best part is that I had FIVE business days from the date on the letter to address the issue. The date on the letter was 11/07. I live in Hawaii... mail takes an extra couple of days. I had ONE day to make every phone call and get this sorted. Because of the time difference, I've had to stay up till 3 am HST to call Lexis Nexis (who does the checks for Target) when they opened.

So the outcome? I had to e-mail them a scan of my GC, SSC, and military dependent ID. How long will it take to verify? 24-26 business days. Bye-Bye job.

How can they be in the dark about SSNs issued from OVER a year ago? How is my SSN not available to look up when I know it is valid? I applied for a dozen jobs on this island and this is the first one I get and it just slipped through my fingers. Pissed off.

Has this happened to anyone else on the planet or am I just super unlucky?

This happened to this person at Target recently too. http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/398982-need-help-to-understand-what-is-wrong-about-not-hiring-me/

Because of his English it was unclear what was going on, but it certainly sounds like Target needs to get with the program.

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package

At least he got the decency of a phone call. All I have is a lousy letter.

Called my Target HR to follow up on the situation and was told I was verified already. That happened really quickly which is a relief. Orientation this weekend. Good luck to anyone else waiting on this!

My hubby had the same "issues" when Rite Aid was doing a background check on him. The HR Manager said his name is not "showing up".

So my husband went to SS office and verified his name. They got his names mixed up so he had it corrected. He presented his Philippine passport and original NSO birth certificate. SS issued him a new card (with the same SS number). He did not pay for anything.

Second, he made an INFOPASS with USCIS. He also got his name corrected. He surrendered his green card. He was scheduled for biometrics. No fee was collected since the error was not his fault, probably done by the immigration officer at his POE (LAX). I think it was after 2 months he got his new green card (with the same number as the first one). His complete and full name already printed on the front of the GC.

He got a job after. :innocent:

Great to hear!!

I'm thinking a lot of people that have struggled to find jobs this year will be having more luck now that the holiday season is coming around. Retail stores will be hiring left and right. Now's the chance to snatch some of those jobs up!
