My retirement was secured quite some time ago and not by the government. I could burn my SS benefit if it came to it. I do not, and have not, counted on that. If it happens, great. I never favored the voucher system either. FWIW.

And even in that thread someone pulled up an earlier post which proved I was not wealthy but everyone ignored it and continued the apoplectic fits that someone might actually be able to pay cash for medical care. You can start here Gary, there's many more posts of you bragging about your lavish lifestyle and putting other people down for not having the things you have and leading the fantastic life that you and Alla do. How do you afford that lavish lifestyle without being wealthy? All of the trips to the Ukraine, Europe, and Canada, home on Lake Champlain with a private beach, the ski resort memberships, the college tuitions, etc, etc. You were either lying when you made the post below, or you're lying now about going on welfare, either way it turns up, you're a liar. My telling you to grow a pair was not in regard to you going on welfare, it was in regard to you bragging about it. You continuosly post on VJ that RUB women only like real men. Alla goess shooting Saturday morning, except in winter when she goes skiing. We have an annual pass at three ski resorts near our home. Bolton Valley, Mad River Glen and Jay Peak. Dancing lessons Tuesday and Wednesday evening, health club Thursday for swimming, fun dancing Friday night and sometimes Saturday night. She cleans floors usually Monday and Tuesday morning. She has nursing school Wed., Thurs., Friday mornings. Occasional ice skating, horseback riding. We live on Lake Champlain and have a private beach. She sunbathes/swims naked. Sometimes sleeps naked on the beach on hot summer nights. We have no AC...too bad, eh? Photos of all this, except the naked type, are at my profile, just click "photos"

She does fashion modeling also, usually one or two days per month.

So when do you think she would do more? Monday night? Yeah that's open. She is paying bills right now...she does all the bookkeeping for the house also.

She has been to Canada dzens of times this year,(although since that is an hour drive to Montreal it doesn't qualify as travel) New York and Boston for multiple days twice each, Ukraine/Russia for a month, Germany and Italy coming and going for three days each (love that new US passport! No visas needed!) Houston once, to get our son settled at Rice University for his fully paid Doctoral degree and we will go there again in February and to Ukraine during her winter break from nursing school. You? Where have you traveled so far this year?

I believe that. You worked hard, invested smart-ly, and did what I wish every American would do. However, reality tells us that this is not the case. A very large number (forgot how many exactly) of Americans are not ready to retire . . . ever. Yes, it's their god-damn fault for not saving for a rainy day, assuming that they really could on an income that was barely enough to pay the bills and get food on the table. But what are they going to do? Do we let them steal a shopping cart and use that as transportation in their old days or would you agree with me (?) that there are cases where the Libertarian concept of letting everyone be the master of his future doesn't work, and it makes sense for the . . . . (grasp) . . . government, to make sure we don't need to build big parking lots for shopping carts?

Should the government stay out of health care, out of retirement, out of education . . . out of all these things?

We save money to go to Ukraine where we have a flat that is owne free and clear and costs us $400 per year in taxes and utilities. Woo hoo! We're on a roll now. Gun club membership is $50 per year, range fees included! Ski pass for the family...hold on...$400. The ski resort is 20 minutes away. This IS Vermont, we have mountains and lots of snow. We do have the lakefront home which has a payment less than most people pay for a two bedroom apt. (big down paymnet from 35 years of home ownership) Sergey is PAID a stipend, and has PAID tuition to go to college. His masters degree in Russia was on a full ride scholarship. We paid for his bachelors degree, $3000 per year room and board included! Alla had a 50% scholarship for her masters here, and nearly that much for her RN education. Skating is $5 on Friday night. FREE if we drive up to Montreal and skate an Parc LaFountaine or at the basin in Vieux Montreal. OMG!!!!

My idealism as a liberal that also believes very strongly in the virtues of personal achievement and responsibility argue in favor of being horrified at your choice. But at our age some of that idealism is bound to give way to personal pragmatism. If you really can do it I say go for it! You have earned it with your lifetime of contributions to the system.

I suspect that in the end you may have a hard time retiring early. Those of us who have been very productive and self-sufficient over the years have grown too accustomed to getting the kind of respect that our positions in life bring. You may not like the attitudes you face from people that will look at you as no longer a productive contributor to society. But what the heII, why not try it and see. I hope you don't have to permanently burn any bridges to do it. Keep us posted on how it works out!

People like to distort what I say to make their own arguments seem to be viable. Frequent trips to Canada must mean you are rich. When you live 10 minutes from the border and Montreal is the nearest city to your home? Kinda like someone in Joliet driving to Chicago! Woo Hoo!

I never said I was going to retire or even quit work, James. I am simply going to scale back. For about 2 years, perhaps more depending on Alla's education decisions. I will be doing the same job, just less of it and in a different status. I can replace it with time spent on my family and in my woodshop (Oh yeah, a complete woodshop, check out what you can get tools for on CraigsList and garage sales)where I will build furniture for a fraction of what it costs to buy (that's what poor people have to do)

I am simply getting myself out of the sliding welfare benefit hole in the middle class and eliminating the time spent earning money that I never will see,and only pay tax on as it floats through my bank account, it is earning money to pay things someone else will pay for. What's the point of working? I also believe in the virtues of personal achievement...what are they? Between the income levels of $2800 and $5800 per month there are NONE for me, in my situation, with my particular parameters. Until I can earn much more than $5800 per month, I will just stay below $2800 and let someone else pay the difference.
