Republicans - a dying brand

For those over there on the far right that still believe that Mitt lost because he wasn't conservative enough - there's not majority for conservative policies. Forcing him over to the right during the primaries is what killed his chances. But keep ignoring reality. Please do.

Republicans got crushed on the issues, too

By NBC's Mark Murray

For all the talk about how Mitt Romney and the Republicans lost when it came to demographics, the turnout, and the tactics, the exit polls also show that they lost when it came to the issues.

For years, the GOP has branded itself as the party that supports low taxes (especially for the wealthy) and opposes abortion and gay marriage.

But according to the exit polls from last week’s presidential election, a combined 60% said that tax rates should increase either for everyone or for those making more than $250,000. Just 35% said the tax rates shouldn’t increase for anyone.

What’s more, 59% said that abortion should be legal in all or most cases.

And by a 49%-to-46% margin, voters said that their states should legally recognize same-sex marriage.

Even on comprehensive immigration reform -- a subject that some Republicans (like George W. Bush) once supported, but most no longer do -- 65% said most illegal immigrants should be offered a chance to apply for legal status. (And since the election, GOP senators like Lindsey Graham and John McCain are now signaling renewed support for comprehensive immigration reform.)

The one bright spot for Republicans on the issues: A majority of voters -- 51% -- indicated that the government is doing too many things better left to businesses and the individuals. By comparison, 43% said government should do more to solve problems.

That’s a reversal from 2008, when 51% said the government should do more and 43% said it is doing too much.

Mitt needed to offer to reward illegals along with offering more free stuff.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Remove the Christian Coalition from the Republican Party please - happy to start over without them.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

The Republicans will have to come up with a workable solution. Or they can continue to head into irrelevancy. All the same to me.

That's why I posted that. What did Obama have to offer that Mitt didn't? That's an easy one. Reward the illegals and hand out free stuff while looking to raise taxes on the wealthy. Hey it worked didn't it?

Yep. That's easy. Reality and arithmetic.

I heard this tune in 2008 as well...its just cyclical politics.

Not really. Attitudes have changed and shifted. Look at marriage equality. Look at immigration. Look at tax policy. These are not swings of a pendulum, these are actual shifts in attitude. Republicans in office know this which is why you will see a shift in the party. They will do immigration reform. They will raise taxes. They will silence the crazies. They will do this or their support will not be asked or needed after 2014.

I agree with to a point about taxes, marriage and abortion. Immigration etc. The social ones are silly to lose votes over in the year 2012. But what I don't get is if the R's go left on most of these issues, what will they have to separate them from the D party?

Well, these are not issues that parties in other developed countries fight over and they maintain multiparty systems despite agreeing on the basic social compact.

Why does everyone keep on saying the GOP needs to change and adopt new social policies? If Republicans were to adopt all of the changes people are suggesting, they are just libertarians.

Keep ignoring the problem. That'll work. Good luck in 2016.

What problem? Either the repubs get a minority to run for prez, one that rewards illegals and offers free stuff or their cooked. That's what the dems did and it worked like a charm for them. It doesn't matter that their helping to make the US another 3rd world ####### hole, as long as they keep the power.

They will keep the power unless your party changes. Again, good luck. Your attitude reflects the problem. :)

People like you are the minority. Congrats.

It might help if you knew the first thing about accounting. If you spend more than you make you end up going broke. Seeing how Obama doesn't have a plan on cutting the deficit yet he keeps offering free stuff while soaking this country with illegals common sense says it's a no win situation. You either get an austerity plan while getting tough on illegals and cutting out the freebies or you go broke. When you do learn something of accounting and the Fed deficit get back with me on that one.
