Hi!

We are planning to get married here in Michigan, my US fiance's residence. I'm looking online for the requirements to obtain a marriage license and according to this website, http://www.ewashtenaw.org/government/clerk_register/cr_vitals_marriage_info.html, we are BOTH required to present a valid driver's license OR state-issued ID.

The problem is I don't have any state-issued ID, of course. Pls give me an advice on how we can get a marriage license based on your experience. What documents do we need to prepare? If I do really need a state-issued ID, where can I get one?

We really need this info asap. Thanks everyone in advance!

Your passport is good enough. You don't have to be a resident of the state of Michigan to get married there. That is what the state i.d. is, is just showing you are a resident of the state of Michigan. Your passport will be enough documentation. Don't worry, I had to go thru the same thing in Idaho :)

Have you fiance call his or her local town clerk or whom ever issues the marriage license in his or her home town. In NY my fiance can just use his passport even though on the paperwork they gave us it asks for a drivers license.

Good luck

You get the state ID at the local driver's license facility.

You get the marriage license at the local county clerk's office.

Phil (Lockport, near Chicago) and Alla (Lobnya, near Moscow)

As of Dec 7, 2009, now Zero miles apart (literally)!

Thanks for the info! Makes me so relieved right now! :)

Did you have to fill out an application form? Coz clerk told my fiance's mom that we can get this form online but I have yet to find it. Will keep trying though!

Idaho is not Michigan. Each state's marriage laws vary and can even change depending on the county within that state. The OP is best contacting the county clerk's office if they aren't able to get a temporary Michigan ID.

Hi LeftCoastLady,

Thanks for your reply. Actually, I was mistaken because that's not the county we are getting married in, so I can't use that application form. I've found the appropriate county's website and it looks like I won't be needing a state-issued ID, just my USC fiance's. To be sure, I've emailed them about it and I hopefully hear from them asap.

You will only need your passport to get married! First you both have to go in person and apply for the marriage license and fill out a form (online) or in person and pay whatever fee you have to pay for that and then they will tell you within which time frame you guys can get married. Your fiance will have to go with his driver license or any other ID.

They required my passport only as that was the only document I had obviously (as most of the fiance/es that arrive in US under the k1 visa).

Actually 'left coast lady' you do not have to be a resident of a state to get married in it. And yes, I do know what I am talking about because I had my notary license in Michigan and that is not a requirement. Just because I didn't get married there does not mean I don't know what I am talking about...Thanks

-leftcoastlady--Also, please do some research before assuming one doesn't know what they are talking about.

Excuse? Because you used the example of what you went through in Idaho, I simply stated that it isn't the same. I don't know your backstory and for all I know, you could be making things up. Regardless, it is best for the OP to use the current information provided on the specific county's site to learn more about what the process is where they will be married since, as I stated, it can vary by state and even by county. I've done plenty of research on this topic as you can see in my signature, I have a link to search for information at the county level as well as an extensive spreadsheet for all 50 states plus DC for various state-level services.

I suggest you find another person to pick on because I'm not the one. Enjoy your Thursday.
