You can get cute Adidas or Puma track suits at Macy's and usually can find some for a bargain at TJ Maxx or Marshall's.

You can also get cute lounge wear suits at Old Navy.

I like this one but with the pink instead of the blue. :D

I don't think toothpaste is allowed. :(

I have a 8 hour layover at Heathrow and read on a different forum that near terminal 4 you can walk to the Hilton and for $10 pounds you can use the gym facilities including the showers, sauna, etc. I think I'll do that to freshen up before the flight to Cairo.

I never even thought of changing in the plane. How the heck do you do that in those tiny lil bathrooms on the plane?

Wow 1ö pounds? That is expensive... Well if you love the man enough!

Toothpaste is allowed! Don't worry! :)

When did you fly last? I flew 2months ago and NOTHING was allowed then...

Doodle: You are flying British air? Ouch...good luck..you will need it!

Snaps avoid British Airs, Air Italia and Air France...worst airlines I ever been on...donnot get me wrong..British Air look nice, but service sucks! For me I always fly Lufthansa....also KLM is good. United Airways I have flown on in the US...cannot complain about them! But Southwest and America West sucks...hmmm arent they joined now with United?

I can't bring perfume. :(

Tear out one of those samples from a magazine, the rub on kind. I don't think you will have a problem bringing that.

Good one JP!
Actually they've changed that. This is per British Air, though it depends on where you're going. This is for those exiting London going on to an International destination...

Got an email from British Airways with this info tonight:

Dear Ms. X,

The European Union, including the United Kingdom, has adopted new security rules that permit the carrying of liquids, gels and pastes in limited quantities through airport security in passenger hand baggage. The changes will be effective from November 6, 2006.

This new policy applies to all passengers on all carriers who are departing from or transferring through any EU gateway, as well as those departing from or transferring through Albania, Kosovo, Switzerland, Norway and Iceland. This means the same policies apply for any customers travelling from or through any of these countries.

These new rules bring the EU policies more closely in line with current policies for US- and Canada-departing flights, and ensure that customers transferring on British Airways flights in the UK will be able to carry liquids, gels and pastes in limited quantities on board to their final destination.

Liquids must be held in individual containers not exceeding 100ml (approximately 3.5 fl. oz.).

Liquids, gels and pastes that may be carried onboard include shampoo, creams, hair gel, hair spray, suntan lotion, toothpaste, liquid or aerosol deodorant, perfume, cosmetics such as mascara and lip gloss, water and other drinks, soups and syrups. Other items of similar consistencies may also be carried on board.

All liquid, gel, and paste containers must be carried in a clear plastic zip-top or re-sealable bag that does not exceed 20cm x 20cm (8 inches x 8 inches) or one-quart capacity. Each passenger will be permitted to carry one of these re-sealable bags. Items must fit in the bag comfortably and the bag must be completely closed.

At the airport security search, the plastic bag must be removed from the cabin bag and x-ray screened separately.

For more information on this policy, along with other baggage information and information on duty-free goods, please visit ba.com.

Yours sincerely,

William B. Harford Jr.

Senior Vice President Commercial, Americas

Thanks for posting this...I will be saving it for myself!
I have to say that I LOATHE, DETEST and ABHOR the Frankfurt airport and have vowed NEVER to go there again, no matter HOW enticing the airfare or the connection. They confiscated/stole my Palestinian flags :angry::angry: and I will never EVER forget.

Schiphol in Amsterdam is not bad -- very clean and friendly with lots of stores, internet cafes, restaurants, even a museum ! But the layovers for Middle East connections seem to be hellishly long -- mine was 9 hours. You can take the train into the city if you want for a quick tour. Note -- they do not sell gum in the Schiphol airport -- it's against the law. I'm thinking -- you can get prostitutes, marijuana, hash and more perfectly legally only a few minutes away -- but NO GUM BUYING in the airport ! (You are permitted to chew gum that you bring from elsewhere.)

I do have to agree with you Frankfurt sucks.... and in Frankfurt and Amsterdam MENA layovers are terrible...

I don't know what their reasoning was -- they didn't discuss the matter with me.

And you didn't put them in their place? :o I'm stunned!

ditto

They did not discuss it with me -- meaning they didn't even TELL me they were taking my flags. They were taken during the screening, out of my view, and nothing was said about it. I didn't know they had done it until I opened my bag, later.

I have heard many stories of the security of *just taking* people's belongings...but luckily I did not have this prob...
I haven't met my Sami yet and I don't know what I'll wear.

Why dont' you ask Sami? I asked Usama what people wear and he said anything and everything though he'd prefer me to dress conservatively. I'm sure he'll know what the women can and cannot wear there.

Ok so aside from crappy service are they ok? I'm more concerned wtih safety than with service. I'm used to crappy service here in Boston. lol. My main concerns are:

1) I don't want the plane to crash

2) I don't want to be taken hostage on the plane

3) I don't want the plane to explode while landing due to faulty equipment

4) I'd like to not have to deal with a shoe bomber while en flight.

Other than that I'm cool.

Why would he think that? My husband and I talked online for 4 years before we finally were together here in the US. During that time, we certainly talked about the differences in cultures, in our countries, and what not. Talking about his culture is an absolute necessity if you're going to marry someone from the Middle East. It's important to know the differences, what he expects in a wife, and that he knows what you expect in a husband, because there will probably be some areas where you don't agree and will need to come to a compromise in.

Clothing is definately one of those areas that need to be talked about. It shouldn't be insulting to ask what would be appropriate to wear when you visit. Frame it in a way where you are asking him because you would like to respect himm his culture and his country. It would probably be a good idea to see if he has any expectations of how you dress in general too :)

If you can't ask (although I would highly recommend you do), pick up a travel guide, which wil most likely have a section on dress codes.

I am sure he will not feel hurt or mocked -- it's a perfectly reasonable question. He will understand that you want to be dressed properly for his culture, and most likely appreciate that you cared enough to ask.

Kuwait is very VERY used to foreigners. You do not have to dress as the Muslim women do or cover your hair or face. In general, you can wear Western-style clothes IF they are conservative -- pants or long dresses/skirts that fall WELL below the knee -- close to the ankle is better. Your sleeves should cover at least the elbow -- closer to the wrist is better. Forget the shorts and the short skirts and the tank tops -- NOT appropriate in this culture.

Do not wear tight, clingy or thin clothes that are in any way transparant. Do not wear extremely tight jeans -- and if you do wear jeans, combine them with longer shirts/sweaters that cover your rear end. Make sure your necklines do not show ANY cleavage -- above the collar bone is best. Short-sleeved T-shirts are probably not good for women to wear in this culture, as the cloth is very thin.

You can wear high heels if you like -- no problem with that. And a long coat or even raincoat is very handy, especially in fall/winter -- it will help cover you properly, but fashionably. Bring a couple of scarves -- you will need to cover your hair if you go into mosques, or in case you go into rural areas that are less used to foreigners. Or you can always buy some in the markets there.

But do ask your fiance. He will know best what is appropriate and expected of you in his country.

Try not to be afraid -- people in the Middle East are generally very nice. (L) Just be open to new customs and new experiences. I hope it will be the trip of a lifetime for you !

Talk to Sami about how the women dress in Kuwait. From what I understand Kuwait is quite similar to many Gulf countries in which they wear the full higab...higab, niqab, abaya, chador. They go all out. I'm not sure if they're as strict as Saudia but I know many if not most of the women dress similarly to Saudi women when going out. If I were you I'd research Kuwait before going.

I haven't met my Sami yet and I don't know what I'll wear.

I wore jeans and a knit shirt on the way out there (not very comfortable), and knit pants and t-shirt on the way back (better choice). I definitely reccomend slip-on shoes of some sort. Flip-flops dont give good support, but backless sneakers are a good choice. I wasnt too concerned with looking super sexy upon my arrival, just decent. I had a bottle of mouthwash, a bottle of facial toner, chapstick, mint gum, face powder, small stick of deoderant. and a hair brush. It covered the essentials: Clean mouth, fresh non-shiny face, neat hair, and no pit stink. I did carry an extra pair of underpants and socks, so I would feel a little fresher midway through the flight. Although trying to change in the can is challenging.
