Always bring your marriage certificate and a certified one too if you can.

I ordered 5 of them after we got married so I keep them in various places including my glove compartment.

There's no reason NOT to bring it, even if they don't ask you or others for it.

What if you just happen to be the person whose doesn't match on that CBP officer's bad day?

No microchips needed, just the rabies certificate for the pets (unless they've changed something in the past year).

Also bring some ties just in case (not so much for yourself, but you're spouse if you're traveling together).

I'm not sure why you would need to bring ties? For the Canadian, it is completely unnecessary as you can move back to Canada anytime you would like. You don't have to prove your intent to return to the US. I asked a CBP why they wanted to see my US GC, and they said it was simply because they want to make sure we can get back into the US after our visit (not sure why they would be concerned with that, but that's the Canadian way I suppose) For the spouse, it is perfectly legal to enter Canada and apply for status inland, so I don't see why Canada would be terribly concerned. Also, the Canadian spouse having a valid American GC is a pretty strong suggestion you are going to return. I've never heard of anyone having an issue with this.

I said just in case. Do you want to be the person that encounters the crabby CBP officer?

I've had to be that person. It isn't fun.

I disagree, but OK. If you want to be paranoid I suppose it might be an idea.

I misread it, I thought the ties were for something kinky.

Going through what I have at the border with my husband for the past 3 years, you'd be paranoid too.

I've been handcuffed ON MY OWN SIDE, my husband has been threatened with deportation, denied at least 5 times, those people can get scary enough to make you ####### your pants.

I've been travelling back and forth a minimum of 8 times a year, for 6 years, with my passport in one name and my GC in another. Even my NEXUS was approved with those ID's. Never have I been asked for my marriage certificate, and never have I been asked to change my ID. The paper trail for GC approval is based on the marriage, so it's pretty safe to assume they know you got married.
