“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years.”

― Alexis de Tocqueville

“The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money.”

 What an overreaction, based on delusion instead of facts. Going to be a long four years for you, sir. And if Republicans continue to think the way you do, 2016 is going to be a mess as well. Have fun with that.

Usually outsiders have more common sense than you do. A shame really, you've not been here all that long and already you're drinking the kool-aid produced by the cult known as the Democratic party. A real shame indeed.

Look up the history of the Democratic party and try to dare point out where they've actually changed in their POV. The POV is the exact same as it's always been with 'minorities' they've just gone about a different way of attacking the beast.

You need to be a little bit more scholarly in your research.

alexis de tocqueville remarked just a few years after the founding of the Republic of the United States that it would stand only until the moment when the people discover that they can vote in those that will give them the most benefit. this didn't happen when America was a "melting pot", only after it became a "tossed salad". the lack of national identity those living in USA but not born here embody has resulted in the subrogation of rule of law, and will only serve to turn America into just another $hit-hole just like the one they left to come here.

my plan is to float above the scum and cling to my guns and my bible. cold dead hands will be common before you know it, one way or another. you need to watch "children of men" to see the future of America. it's gonna get ugly. i hope it does soon enuf that i'm still around to join in the turkey shoot.

"But one also finds in the human heart a depraved taste for equality, which impels the weak to want to bring the strong down to their level, and which reduces men to preferring equality in servitude to inequality in freedom"

Right Wingers have a habit of misquoting or making up quotes of famous people. whistling.gif

Sorry, Conservatives, De Tocqueville Did Not Call the 2012 Election

From the moment President Obama was reelected, disgruntled conservatives began circulating a quote heralding democracy's downfall at the hands of greedy voters. We hate to break it to them in their time of mourning, but their favorite bit of historical wisdom is fabricated.

Spend three minutes surfing the conservative web today, and you're likely to come across variants of this quote, usually attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville, maybe even a couple times:

A democracy can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largess from the public treasury.

Radio talk show host Laura Ingraham dropped it on her blog, with the insight "Alexis de Tocqueville called it 200 years ago." The instigators of the Free Republic message boards are rallying around the sentiment. The lurkers over at pro-gun forum GlockTalk are big fans. Fundamentalist Christian non-profits are using it as their Facebook status. Even real professors from real colleges are invoking the bogus quote.

You know the right wing nuts are in trouble if they start quoting the French.

did i mention my hugenot ancestry?

anyway, i'm out of here. arguing with liberals is like fighting with a menstruating badger on bath salts.

I suspect that those using the misquote would not like Tocqueville as much if they knew how central equality was to his analysis.

The very start of the massive Democracy in America begins:

AMONG the novel objects that attracted my attention during my stay in the United States, nothing struck me more forcibly than the general
equality of condition
among the people. I readily discovered the prodigious influence that this primary fact exercises on the whole course of society; it gives a peculiar direction to public opinion and a peculiar tenor to the laws; it imparts new maxims to the governing authorities and peculiar habits to the governed.

I soon perceived that the influence of this fact extends far beyond the political character and the laws of the country, and that it has no less effect on civil society than on the government; it creates opinions, gives birth to new sentiments, founds novel customs, and modifies whatever it does not produce. The more I advanced in the study of American society, the more I perceived that this
equality of condition
is the fundamental fact from which all others seem to be derived and the central point at which all my observations constantly terminated.

Just curious, who did you vote for? Oh right, Mitt Romney, since he actually worked a day in his life(in your own words) but you seem to be the most ardent supporter of the middle, just slightly right...

Again, reading comprehension might do you some good. If you actually would read what I post, you'd know I didn't vote for Romney, nor did I want him to be President.

So you think Romney was a better pick than Obama, yet you didn't vote for either one. You clearly don't like Obama but you have his name and pic as you screen name. I think you might need a hug
