Birth certificate translation for AOS.

I need to translate my birth certificate to go with my husband's AOS application. I'm a linguist and am certified and fluent in both my birth language and English. But I just read on the immigration website that the translation can't be done by someone who has a connection with the AOS applicant or is mentioned on the application. Also that it needs to be notified.

What can those of you who have already gone through this process tell me?

You can translate yourself if you are competent in both languages. You just need to be sure to include a certification of your translation, as explained here:

I translated my birth certificate myself for my AOS application, no problem. Many VJ members did it too

Also, are you a US citizen by birth? If yes, your birth certificate is not in english already?

I'm a naturalized U.S citisen and for some reason my parents neglected to have my birth certificate translated years ago when we came to this country. lol Can I send the translated birth certificate without notarization?

It does not need to be notarized. It just needs to include the Certification by Translator as shown in the post and USCIS website linked above.

Hmm... so if you didn't get your US citizenship by birth, your birth certificate is not needed. Someone corrects me if I'm wrong, but the USCIS want a documents that shows that you are a US citizen. A copy of your naturalization certificate, or copy of all the pages of your US passport is what they want for example.

I am guessing this is an AOS from a visa other than family-based so they are needing to send the I-130 at the same time. You need proof of US citizenship which is a copy of your naturalization certificate or a copy of your entire US passport, all pages front to back. http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/i-130instr.pdf

What country did you immigrate from? Your timeline is absent.

The reason that I ask is that there are certain special cases with regards to translations of such documents.

In our case, the US consulate in Guangzhou (hence, the US Department of State) only accepts Chinese "Notarial Certificate" (AKA White Book) for birth certs, divorce/marriageability certs, etc. for Chinese visa applicants. It is an abstracted, translated, notarized, and certified translation bound in a slick white paper folder. For our AOS processing we are supplying White Books for my wife and son's birth certs,, and divorce decree.

If you don't need the Chinese method, you should be good to go.
