My husband was approved at the Jamaican Embassy on 10/26. I contacted the immigration attorney I hired and was told to make an appointment when he arrives. When I asked why...she said, "Depending on whether he gets a green card or a visa will dictate what we need to do next". I'm confused, I've already paid about 3500 dollars and I've done most of the work, now they attorney wants me to set another appointment for what? After following visajourney, I thought the next step is filing the change of status from conditional to permanent within 90 days prior to the 2 year anniversary of my husband's admittance to the US. If I am correct, why do I need to pay a lawyer more money when I can do it myself with VJ help? Also, I'm not sure how the social security card is issued. Do we have to apply at the office when he gets here or is it automatically sent after his arrival? Thanks in advance for advice and help.

We got rid of our lawyer after we got our NOA2 and found VJ, This is a very helpful site, unless you have some major concerns or issues with your case, most of us do it ourselves

If you were approved your husband will receive a green card a little while after he enters the US. Your attorney is trying to get more money out of you for nothing. Unless you have a difficult situation. The entire process can be done without the assistance of an attorney. You will have to apply at the office for his SS card.

How long have you been married if it is more than 2 years you will get a 10 yr card and if he does citizenship in a few years you will never have to deal with them again :D If he gets a conditional card for being married for less then 2 years then 90 days before it expires you will file a petition for removal of conditions which is fairly easy by using the guides on VJ and you dont need the lawyer! Congrats on the approval!!

Thank you to all for validating my thoughts. I wish I had found visa journey before starting this process 15 months ago.

God Bless and good luck with each of your situations.

We have done the entire process without a lawyer. The section called The Guides has step by step instructions. The forms from USCIS also have instructions. We just got the 10 yr Green card and it was pretty simple. We sent in the forms and fees and as much evidence as possible to show we are a couple. Save things like holiday cards addressed to you both, pics with friends and family, airline tickets, itinerary and hotel documents. We included bank statements, the mortgage and deed, utility bills, cell phone bill showing both numbers, direct deposit receipts showing money paid into joint account and a lot of additional documents. Some people ask friends and family to write a letter stating you are a couple and how they know it to be true. We did that for the visa but not for the removal of conditions. You can definitely manage on your own and you can come on here with any questions. There is usually a forum thread started for each month when folks file so you can go on and discuss where you are at in the process.

after you where aproved at the interview, you don't need a lawyer,cr-1 once you arrive in the united states about a month or two you should receive your permanent resident card GC start to gather evidence things like married couples do togather durning the two years of living togather as a married couple, insurance, driver license, loans togather, lease, utility bills, cell phone bills, mortgage, banking togather, tax transcripts joint, trips togather, some pictures togather, different times and places with family and friends, letters from family that your marriage is true a bona fide marriage, add some junk mail holiday cards address to both of you, when the time comes to remove conditions you will have all your evidence, so you don't need a pay a lawyer to pay him 1,000 you give him all the evidence you did all the work for him he types it in the boxes 1-751,make sure you make two sets keep one just in case one gets lost or you get a rfe you can see what it is,good luck.

You applied for 130, he will receive everything at your home address or whatever address you used on your paperwork. He should get both GC and SSC. You do not need a lawyer. My friend that is a lawyer told us that you only need an immigration lawyer when you have waiver issues, or criminal issues.
