How long it will take to issue visa and getting passport back?

My case has been in AP since April. I requested for my passport back in July since I had to travel outside Canada. I just received letter from Montreal Consulate IV dept. asking me to send the following:

1. Valid passport for visa issuance.

I am hoping that this means they have completed the AP and the visa is ready. I have plans for Thanksgiving with my family in US. I have only 8 working days till Thanksgiving. If I mail my passport first thing on Monday, how long it will take for my passport to get to the Consulate Officer and have my visa issued and the passport return.

Should I wait till Thanksgiving, or should I send my passport on Monday. I will need passport to cross border for Thanksgiving celebration.

Monday is a holiday in the US and the Embassy here in the DR is closed, I am pretty sure it will be closed there as well. So they will not receive it until Tuesday. So that shortens your time to 7 days. You have no guarantee once they get it how long it will take. Could be a few days, could be a few weeks.

Montreal tends to be slow going through mail (like a couple days slow). Like the other member said, Monday is a holiday (Remembrance Day in Canada), so that cuts off one day. And I don't know if Montreal is going to take time once they do receive your passport or just plop the visa in right away and send it out. And when they do send it out, it'll take a couple of days to reach you.

Honestly, it might be safer to send the passport back AFTER your Thanksgiving holiday cause you might not get the passport back in time.

I would NEVER have my future in the hands of USCIS or any Embassy/Consulate if time is tight. I would visit for Thansgiving and after returning to Canada send in the passport as long as it is within the time frame they gave you. Expecting to receive your passpot this time of year in a few days when you abolutely need it for travel is puting you future in their hands and we all know there is a very, very good chance you will not receive your passport for your Thanksgiving travel plans.

Good luck,

Dave

Thanks everyone to chime in. Also, I think its going to take few more days if the passport does not go directly to consulate but to a facility in Old Montreal first before reaching the shelves in consulate. I am going with the advise to wait until Thanksgiving.

That's why it takes a few days to go through mail. Mail is sent to an off-site location first.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving in the US :)

And its not as if as soon as it gets to a desk they are simply going to mail it out ASAP---well it could happen, lol But the past as shown a very slow turn around! Do the trip--then mail it in!! And if its taking forever---get the USA spouse to contact his congress person. best of luck

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Could someone explain to me what AP is?

Unless it really is advance parole like the wiki says, but I just felt like that didn't make sense in most of the situations I see it used.

AP means two things on VJ.

1. Advance Parole (for K1 visa applicants)

2. Administrative/Additional Processing (could happen at any stage: NVC or embassy)

In this case, AP means the second one.

I don't think I like the idea of additional or administrative processing.

What causes this?

Could just be a random thing......Person was born in another country that doesn't get along so great with the USA. Criminal background.....Thats why one should never make concrete plans until ya have the package in your hands!

Gotchya. So given that my husband and I have clean backgrounds and were born in the US and Canada, we shouldn't have this issue. I'll keep hoping for that.
