So the parts of the Bible written by Paul have not been tampered with? I know Muslims who argue that the release from Old Testament rules was part of the "errors" in the Bible.

I agree we are given permission to eat the food that is permissible to Christians and Jews, but what is is not clear if we are given permission to eat food from those that not following dietary laws (and if Christians were truly released from dietary laws if the Bible is full of errors as some say). This is certainly a gray area. Certainly there are Jews today that do follow and do not follow the dietary laws given to them, so why is it interpreted that the permission to eat the food of Christians/Jews was meant for both those following and those not? It is similar to saying that the Christians that had not started believing in the triune were what God was referring too and not the other Christians when discussing marriage, etc. It is a selective interpretation of "which" Christians and Jews are meant. This also doesn't address that when buying meat in a store, we have no clue if the source is from a Christian, Jew, Buddhist, Hindu, Atheist, etc.

Again not trying to argue, only explaining it how I see it, and yes you have become more PC.

We don't know which parts of the bible were tampered with. The only thing we can do in that regards is believe it's from God if it agrees with the Quran and conclude it is from man and shaytaan if it disagrees.

It is not my argument that the dietary laws that either the jews or christians follow is what was actually commanded from God since the Quran confirms that the laws of both religions have been tampered with. My argument and opinion is that we were still given permission to eat their foods despite that.

I don't know what that has to do with marriage as one has nothing to do with the other. I don't think I've ever made the claim that muslim men can marry women from one sect of christianity and not from another. The only argument I've made about that is that the woman should be a chaste and practicing follower of that faith and not just a member in name.

As I stated... this country is majority christian and jew so I don't have a problem with eating food from a store in a country of christians and jews.

It sounds like it's much easier for you to find "halal" food and I think that's great for you. (F) Inshallah, when my husband is here it will be much easier for us as he can slaughter our meat Islamically himself instead of relying on anyone else. :star:

I really couldn't handle my husband slaughtering animals here  and my neighbors probably wouldn't like it either

I was wondering the same thing. But we always have Thanksgiving at my dad's, and he never cooks Halal. The first time he had halal meat he said that it tasted so good and asked where we got it. When we told him he was shocked and said that he might have to start going there if ACME doesn't bring any better tasting meat. I love my dad! If you find out about halal turkey, let me know so I can bring it up to my dad.

My mom tries so hard to accomodate my religious beliefs :luv: she had a "pig-pickin" a few months ago and when we got there she had chicken for me and my kids as well as seperate bowls of vegetarian baked beans and green beans (both without the bacon so common in the south).

I don't think I tell her that I love her enough... I'm gonna call her as soon as I get home and remind her (L)

My mother too. She buys halal when we come for dinner and will call us if she finds a halal place we didn't know about.

I would welcome and encourage it. We've talked about living in the country of where ever we decide to live so we can actually raise some chickens, sheep and goats. Sheep and goat meat are both something he's used to and loves and we'd be hard-pressed to find it in this area.... except in the case that you want them alive... now you can find any live animal you can think of out here in the country :D

One day me, my mom and my kids were driving back to her house (she is in deep country) and I yelled STOP!!! I could have sworn I saw a camel in a fence with some horses and donkeys and stuff... come to find out it wasn't but it was a lama which is pretty close! This farm also has osterichs (SP?), goats, sheep and anything else you can imagine... I keep waiting one day to see an elephant in that fence!

ETA: It probably doesn't bother me as much because I was raised in the country and killing what you eat was something I was raised with. My ex used to get chickens from a friend of his and kill it and clean it for me to cook when we were married too.

Make sure the neighbors don't see it. I have read news stories of people who slaughter animals in their backyards and the neighbors complain about it.

Depends on where you live... in the country they don't mind so much... in Jersey they might take issue with it.

Fair enough. I heard of complaints in Cali when a Mexican immigrant family tried to slaughter a goat. And I just did a search and found a "letter to the editor" to a newspaper in Greensboro, North Carolina, complaining about the same thing. Why is it always a goat?

When I was 5, I had a pet chicken or atleast I thought it was a pet. Anyway, he ran away on the same day we had chicken for dinner.

Well Cali is Cali  I can offer no explaination for anything that goes on there

Greesboro has city limits... butchering supper is usually fowned upon in the city limits of any town

I'm talking in the actual country.... not just down south :P

My parents' place is at the very back of 6 acres of land... trees surround their log cabin and the gravel driveway has to be a mile from the road...

their neighbor on the other side of the street has about the same amount of land but they keep horses on it...

This is the country I'm referring to  They can pretty much do anything out there and their neighbors wouldn't even know much less complain. ;)

However, we got gypped the time we bought halal lamb.

They cut the piece from the lamb (without trimming the fat first), weighed and priced it. When I asked to have the fat trimmed, the assistants were only too glad (as they managed to get a free meal at my expense).

Funny how that'll happen

I remember the first time I realized that Bambi was the same kinda deer as the deer that provided the meat for supper  Let's just say I was convinced we were eating Bambi's mom

I dont know if you really got gypped. Thats how I normally buy lamb. I usually point to the part I want and trim it at home. They actually sell lamb trimmings as well. Its the same thing when I buy meat and ask them to debone it. They weight it with the bone.

What's Halal? Is that Arab for "Kosher"?

Not exactly, though close.

  1. Levitical: as per the book of Leviticus; permitted meats (from cud-chewing cloven-hoof animals; certain birds--not including carrion-birds or birds-of-prey such as raven, seagull, osprey, eagle; locusts/grasshoppers; fish with SCALES AND FINS--disallowing catfish, eel and sturgeon). It is noticeable that the list FORBIDS crustaceans and shellfish (as well as pork). Also forbidden in Levitical diet is the body-fat of hoofed animals (generally ox, goat or sheep; water-buffalo and deer can also be included)
  2. Kosher: subset of Levitical, disallowing mixing (or even having in same meal) of dairy and meat products--so no cheeseburger, meat-korma (korma gravy contains yoghurt) or cream-sauced
  3. halal: as Levitical, forbids pork. But crustaceans and shellfish allowed, as well as "permitted" animal body-fat

(note: not providing link as reading through food laws in Leviticus is rather tedious)

However, we got gypped the time we bought halal lamb.

Maybe wouldn't have been if I'd allowed the fat to be taken home (Pras had wanted to search for gonkura, which we didn't find--claiming the fat went well with it; I stuck to Levitical rule and disallowed it).

As for the bone--well, many curries taste better if prepared with bones in. When we want boneless, it's almost always chicken--for biryani (in which case we just buy boneless breast or thigh).
