Note: food that is kosher is generally a SUBSET of that which is halal (in most cases, blood drained out of meat in both; but halal includes shellfish and crustaceans which are forbidden in kosher).

Generally, we try to stick to Levitical law (gets me in much trouble as Pras likes shrimp/prawns--which are forbidden in Levitical/kosher).

We buy chicken from kosher shop only, and have bought lamb from halal; fish from Korean grocer (H-mart) as we prefer it "live moments ago", but ensure Levitical (visible scales and fins).

Contrary to Jenn's assertion, halal/kosher chicken actually tastes BETTER (and is also better in medicinal properties).

I thought the whole point of the Islamic method of killing the animal is that there is *less* blood.

I heard that too but when they give us the plastic bags with the meat inside, I see a brownish liquid inside, I assume that's blood or something bloodlike

I kinda thought halal and zabiha were the same thing. Good to know! In that case..I always eat halal. There is a halal poultry market in Hamtramck that has live chickens and they kill them in the Islamic manner while you wait. The chicken from that place is the best. There really is a noticeable difference in the quality of the chicken. As far as meat from halal markets..I'd say it's fresher and tastes better than meat bought from the local supermarket.

I'll complicate matters and say we eat halal but not zabiha - that is, we avoid things that are haram, forbidden, such as pork and alcohol. That usually involves reading every single label to make sure there isn't anything hidden somewhere deep down at the botoom.

However, we don't eat zabiha, meat that is slaughtered in the Islamic manner. It's preferable, but we will buy meat from the regular groccery store or at a restaurant and say a prayer before eating it.

Moving to zabiha only meat is something we would like to do in the future, inshaAllah.

I also would like to add, as I feel very blessed that I was living in Michigan where I could buy halal meats of all types (duck, gooseturkey, chicken, beef, mutton, lamb,etc)...even here in this Muslim country Algerie the meat choices are so limited. I have seen turkey chicken mutton and beef and of course all seafood (but let me not include this as all seafood is automatically halal). Beef is way too expensive to even buy little...turkey I donnot know the price of, chicken I think is expensive but we people rarely eat it here...donow is that culture or just the pocketbook...lamb not avaliilbe here, only mutton...they slaughter the lambs only around the BIG Eid ... I miss my duck, chicken wings, chicken cutlets and goose. :(

Just to clarify, I said I thought chicken tastes the same, not worse. But, in any case, isn't taste subjective? Just for *me*, I don't like the taste of the beef as much. I would bet it has something to do with the amount of blood.

ETA: I by no means think that halal meat is gross.

I'm not Muslim (and heck I'm not even supposed to be posting in MENA anymore lol) but I will respond to this anyway. No of course I don't eat halal as a rule (since I'm not Muslim) but we've found that the best deals on meat in our area are from a Pakistani owned halal store. So all the meat we eat is halal. There is plenty of halal food stores within 5 miles of where I live. That includes halal restaurants too. Lots of good kabab places, even a halal Chinese place (haven't tried that, the store looks really messy).
Halal chinese, hmm where do you live Gupt?

We eat halal sometimes. We tried to more during Ramadan. I don't think halal meat tastes as good (beef I mean, chicken is the same), but Wadi thinks it tastes better, of course. Anyone else notice a difference?
Yes I have noticed the difference...halal meat is fresh, so not aged as much of the beef in the supermarkets...snaps and aged beef makes a real good steak....I miss steak...real steak from a steakhouse...so many yrs since I have eaten one! Ones I cook at home, not taste the same :( Again anyone know aof a halal steakhouse?

I definitely would agree that the halal meat is much fresher than what you get in the grocery store. But I still taste a difference between the halal beef and fresh beef from the butcher. I guess I'm the only one though! :)
