AOS approved! What about SSN?

If your passport was stamped with I-551, then you can go to Social Security Office to apply your SSN. If not, you can wait until your real card in the mail.

USCIS doesn't send you any SSN card.

My AOS interview was approved last Wednesday! I am so relieved and happy!

But how do I obtain a SSN? Will they mail it to me together with the green card?

The SS# has nothing to do with the AOS process. You have to to to your nearest Social Security office (check the link below). You have to go there earlier and they will make you to fill out a form. Bring with you your EAD, passport and GC (if you already have it by then). Remember to use whatever last name you used for your AOS process (married or single name).

Once you did the SS# , they will mail it you to your home in a few weeks. There is no need to wait for the GC, you still can go with your EAD, passport and marriage certificate.

I dont have a EAD, and they didn't stamp my passport.

So I have to wait for the green card.

If you did not apply for the EAD and AP when you did the AOS, In that case yes you have to wait for the GC and then you are ready to go. Anyways, bring with you your passport, marriage certificate and of course your GC! It's a very simple process and they mail your SS card to your house in few weeks!

Agree! Sometimes, they'll want to see the marriage certificate as well, depending on the procedure at that branch. You can always go ahead and call them up.

K1 process, October 2010 > POE, July 2011

I-129F approved in 180 days from NOA1 date. (195 days from filing to NOA2 in hand)

Interview took 224 days from I-129F NOA1 date. (241 days from filing petition until visa in hand)

From filing I-129F petition until POE: 285 days

You take yourself to the Social Security Administration Office, once you have the GC, and apply for the SSN. It is a TOTALLY separate process.

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

The VJ guides discuss this about getting your social two weeks after you arrive with your K1, so if you did not, when your green card arrives in a couple of weeks, go to the social security office with your completed form and your identification as required and apply for a social security card.

Yes you will now have to wait until you get your GC. Take your GC and your passport to your local Social Security office and apply cor a social security card.
