We’ve reported to you how New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is diverting resources away from hurricane clean-up efforts in order to keep the NY Marathon on schedule this weekend. (Glenn also talked about the absurdity this morning on his radio program.) Meanwhile, residents on Staten Island are diving in dumpsters in hopes of finding food and residents of Coney Island are trying to fight off looters with sticks and stones. With such a dire situation, you’d think the mayor would take all the help he could get.

Think again.

Bloomberg has reportedly turned down additional help from the U.S. National Guard. “We don’t need it,” Bloomberg insists, despite pleas from the boroughs for back-up. “The NYPD is the only people we want on the street with guns.”

[borough president] Markowitz demanded the National Guard’s help just an hour before Bloomberg’s press conference, claiming that the NYPD and FDNY are “brave — but overwhelmed” by all the challenges Sandy brought when it visited the borough on Monday night: flooding, power outages, and looting.

“All of our resources have been stretched to the limit,” Markowitz said. “In the name of public safety we need to send more National Guard personnel into Coney Island, Manhattan Beach, Gerritsen Beach, Red Hook, and any other locations.”

Markowitz hopes that the sight of an armed soldier would deter criminal activity in the still-unaccessible evacuation zones — such as the rash of break-ins that took place in Coney Island hours after Sandy kissed the borough goodbye — but the Mayor said the NYPD was more than capable of handling the job.

“There are plenty of locations upstate and in surrounding states where they don’t have a police department the size of New York and they can use help [from the National Guard],” said Bloomberg.

A local radio "home repair clinic " show sent a few people down there to help for a few days. They said the destruction is much worse than what is reported in the media. Looting going on at night,copper being ripped out of damaged homes.What is needed is an armed national guard in every street corner from dusk to dawn in the damaged areas, It is a 3rd world country in some parts.Times like this the police are only hours away when you need them.We need more gun control according to the mayor.

This did not happen. Christie refuted this story himself. The crew heard a rumor this would happen, but then they made a call and realized it was nonsense. The crew came to help. Yet, a certain "news" station seems to keep repeating the false story.

The article posted is from over a week ago. The marathon did not run and the vast majority of power is restored.

Why do you think it was illegal? For public safety under certain conditions National Guard can confiscate almost anything you have, as long as you are given a receipt. They cannot confiscate anything in a law enforcement mode. They can detain you until law enforcement arrives.

It was illegal because it was ruled illegal after it was done in New Orleans and there has now been specific federal legislation passed to prevent the confiscation of firearms during national emergenices. Civil authorities cannot disarm you in an emergency situation. You need to pay attention, the NRA succeeded in that legislation after Katrina and it cost the city of NO big time!

The National Guard nor any military branch is allowed to confiscate weapons from legal gun owners unless Martial Law is declared by the president of the United States of America.
