Why is it ok to bash someone's wife based simply on a subjective view of how they look? I realise that such comments are meant to be a joke, but quite frankly modern comedy has moved way beyond cheap jibes that reflect a misogynistic bias - perhaps you guys might like to evolve a little?

No one is thinking she is a spy but when you are the nations top spy and are privy to the most sensitive secrets things like affairs raise your vuneablity as do finicial troubles drug abuse or anything you may wish to keep hidden that our engines could use against you. As I said I am sure that there were internal security reports that document his affair you don't get vetted for CIA chief without secrets like that being in a file somewhere. Look I am not going to "bash the women" and I wouldn't say anything if I thought she would ever read it but...... , you have to admit the women is ripe for a make-over, I have never even seen a hairstyle like that before.

Really it's a tragedy on a number of levels, primarily on his family as the details emerge of how they had sex under the desk and the thousand e-mails he sent to the girlfriends trying ti get her back.... as such details become leaked.

The wife and kids will be crushed to go from Hero-dad to POS dad all in a few weeks.

The beginning of the end came for CIA Director David Petraeus when Paula Broadwell, a younger married woman with whom he was having an affair, “or someone close to her had sought access to his email,” according to the Wall Street Journal’s description of an FBI probe. Associates of Petraeus had received “anonymous harassing emails” that were then traced to Broadwell, ABC’s Martha Raddatz reported, suggesting she may have found their names or addresses in his e-mail.

The e-mail account was apparently Petraeus’s personal Gmail, not his official CIA e-mail, according to the Wall Street Journal. That’s a big deal: Some of the most powerful foreign spy agencies in the world would love to have an opening, however small, into the personal e-mail account of the man who runs the United States’ spy service. The information could have proved of enormous value to foreign hackers, who already maintain a near-constant effort to access sensitive U.S. data.

If Petraeus allowed his Gmail security to be compromised even slightly, by widening access, sharing passwords or logging in from multiple addresses, it would have brought foreign spy agencies that much closer to a treasure trove of information. As the Wall Street Journal hints, investigators were concerned about Petraeus’s Gmail access precisely because of the history of foreign attempts to access just such accounts:

Security officials are sensitive to misuse of personal email accounts—not only official accounts—because there have been multiple instances of foreign hackers targeting personal emails.

A personal e-mail account like Petraeus’s almost certainly would not have contained any high-level intelligence; he probably didn’t keep a list of secret drone-base coordinates on his Google docs account. But access to the account could have provided telling information on, for example, Petraeus’s travel schedule, his foreign contacts, even personal information about himself or other senior U.S. officials.

This is a shame really. Think about it.

You have a family, a wife. If someone were hurting these people, you would kill them...I would anyway. So I would KILL for my wife, my children and take whatever consequences came from that and hope for the best.

If they were in a house fire, I would run into the fire to save them, I would DIE for them.

Then if people's spouse's have SEX with someone, they will throw it all away, tear apart the family, ruin the lives of the people they would KILL or DIE for. For sex? Does it make any sense? believe married people need to commit to each other and make an agreement they can commit to for life. They should not commit to a set of values written by someone else for someone else's purposes. Sex is fun and enjoyable, why not enjoy it? Honesty and trust are important in a marriage, very important, more important than sex. There should be no reason to lie and deceive someone you love for sex. Stupid.

Make a list of the top things important to you about your spouse and "He/she will never have sex with anyone else the rest of their life" won't even make the list.

Anyway, just my 2 cents. To each their own but this man had a stellar career, a family and wife and it is thrown out for sex? Makes no sense to me. Very sad.

I agree it's sad Gary, I don't really understand it. I just think it's beyond silly to read 'conspiracy' into it as others have done. Being in such a high security level, having accomplished as much as Petraus has, it is inconcievable to me how he would compromise himself with an affair. But I think it's his own choice to step down.

I am thinking you are one of these folks that are inhibited by anything sexual. Most cases of espionage do not involve sex. You are one of those that wouldthrow out your family and ruin their lives if your wife had sex with someone else and think if you have extra marital sex you should be imprisoned and the ground around you salted to prevent anything growing there.

But Why is he resigning? Because of some unrealistic demands on anything regarding SEX!!!!!! OMG!!!!!!!! SEX!!!!!!!!! If he had merely cheated on his taxes for a few hundred thousand dollars like Tim Geitner...no problem! If he smuggled gunsto Mexico that resulted in dozens of people getting killed including a couple of US border patrol agents...no problem. If he was incompetent and let terrorists fly airplanes into buildings killing thousands...no problem. BUT SEX, OMG!!!!!!!!!!!! SEX, did you hear me???!!!!! SEX!!!!!! Then he must resign! People get married when they are, say, 25 years old and by that time they have had sex with perhaps a dozen people/partners, whatever. They get married and expect they will go the next 50 years and never have sex with anyone else? Really? If they do they have to destroy the lives of the people they love most, ruin the furture for their children and spouse. Or in this case throw out a career. What nonsense.

The only reason a spy could have any influence over someone they had sex with is because of unreasonable inhibitions about sex! Why is sex different than, say, playing golf with a spy? Because a spy cannot get anything from you to conceal that you played golf with them. "Go ahead, tell my wife I played golf with you" On the other hand, if your wife knew you had sex with that spy and knew it was just recreational sex, like playing golf with a different putter, what would the spy have on you? "Go ahead tell her I had sex with you, I already did because I do not lie to my wife" Better yet, get your wife in on it and have a 3 way with the spy!

We create artificial "taboos" which only lead to heartache and destruction of lives over things which simply have no real value.
