Washington voters approve same-sex marriage

Washington is joining two other states that have passed ballot measures making same-sex marriage legal, CNN is projecting.

After nearly two days of counting, the voting broke down this way: 1,269,917 residents are in favor of it while 1,146,439 are not. By Friday, 75% of precincts were reporting results.

Voters in Maine and Maryland also approved similar measures on Tuesday. Minnesota rejected a ban on same-sex marriage.

In Maryland, 51.9% of voters passed same-sex marriage.

Maine could begin granting marriage licenses to couples as early as mid-December.

Recent national surveys have shown shifting attitudes toward same-sex marriage, with a majority of Americans now approving of marriages between two men or two women. A June CNN/ORC poll, for example, reflected such a shift in opinion in the U.S.

Election Day brought two additional gains for proponents of same-sex marriage: Wisconsin elected America's first openly lesbian senator, Democrat Tammy Baldwin, and President Obama became the first president to openly support same-sex marriage and get re-elected.

While gay rights proponents celebrate this week, many are looking to the U.S. Supreme Court which is set to decide November 20 on whether to weigh several cases including whether the federal government can deny benefits to married same-sex couples.

This proves that in a "blue" area and with enough money spent, Gay-marriage can win, barely.

But beyond that it allowed the people of that area to decide for themselves, which is something I have always been for.

I honor the vote of those folks there,

but on the Left... what do they do when they loose?

They go right back to the courts to overturn the will of the people such as has happened in Ca.

We have seen it time and time again, the Left only loves the voice of the people... when it agrees with them.

Here are some of the things that Floridians rejected this year. You could have put a ban on same sex marriage in the mix and Florida would probably have rejected that, too. I know, Florida passed it earlier but it will be done away with in due time. You can take that to the bank. Look at what we rejected this year and you can see the state is turning blue...

Amendment 1: Health Care Services - call it the "anti Obamacare" amendment

This would add an amendment to the state constitution that attempts to prohibit the government from requiring individuals to purchase health insurance

Amendment 6: Prohibition on Public Funding of Abortions; Construction of Abortion Rights

This amendment would make the existing federal ban on public funding for most abortions part of the state constitution. It would narrow the scope of a state privacy law that is sometimes used in Florida to challenge abortion laws.

Amendment 8: Religious Freedom

Note: This proposal was known as Amendment 7 until a legal challenge by opponents led to the rewriting of some of the ballot language and its reinstatement on the ballot as Amendment 8. This is the reason there is no Amendment 7 on the 2012 ballot.

This amendment would remove the prohibition in Florida’s Constitution that prevents religious institutions from receiving taxpayer funding.

That one is odd, what was that all about?

Public financing of churches. It's what Republicans want to do. Floridians said: ** Off!

Now don't make me dig into this and find out they were actually running soup kitchens and shelters or something which might add a little context to the story.

Go dig. This amendment was to remove this from the FL state constituion...

No revenue of the state or any political subdivision or agency thereof shall ever be taken from the public treasury directly or indirectly in aid of any church, sect, or religious denomination or in aid of any sectarian institution.

It was to open the coffers of the treasury to religious entities. And Florida said: NO!

That one is odd, what was that all about?

1. private religious schools receiving state monies

2. faith-based-initiatives receiving state monies.

Do religious Colleges still get money from the G.I. bill and other such programs?

(Of course)

I knew if we poked a little we would find a union or entity fearing loss of revenue.

g.i. bill is federal money, some states administer the payouts, but it is FEDERAL monies, not state monies.

Some states have their own G.I. Bill (think Hazelwood in Texas)

but

That bill was specifically about tax revenues gathered by the state (for whatever purpose) , going into religious entities.

I'm glad they said no, as I absolutely abhor Bush's faith-based initiatives.

For this to even be on the ballot, though, nailed a coffin shut on that mamby-pamby 'final dreg' of 'that possibility' to get some monies from the state coffers in Florida.

Good For Florida!

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."
