Hello VJ friends,

Because a response by Vermont service Center to my Service request caused some worry, I called the National Customer Service and spoke to an officer. She told me that my wife has been given an A number and I should get my NOA2 soon. I am a little skeptical. Do they give the beneficiary an A number once they approve a petition or this is given after the interview?

Thanks for your feedbacks!

For K1 visas they give A numbers at the NOA2 stage, so I would assume CR-1/IR-1 is the same. It will be above her name on the NOA2.

I asked her to repeat what she said, and she said A#!!

If that's the case and she told the truth, it seems that our ordeal may be near the end (the first step of it at least).

So, the lady I spoke with last night implied that my case has been approved. To make sure I just called National Customer Service again and spoke with another officer. HE told me that A# is not so special and the minute a case is submitted to USCIS it's assigned an A number. He then told me that my case "was assigned to an officer today". I guess this can only be a good news. Any comments?

The 1-800 number is nicknamed the "misinformation line" for a reason. When you get the NOA1 there's no mention of the A number. You would think if simply applying was all it took to get an A number, it'd be on there.

Yes u are right, my case was I-130 and was transfered to a local office for interview. After interview, i was give an approval notice with both WAC and A#.. I dont know what does it stands for, may be a green card number. A week later case was transferred to NVC and I am know processing AOS and other process. But A# for K1 it is weird, what i know about k1 is it is a temporary visit visa to come to the US to get married within 3 months and change case to i-130 ( immigrant visa)

The A number stands for "alien number". It's your identifier with USCIS. You will have the same number throughout the entire process.

The OP is doing a CR-1, I was talking about K1's for my example of where to find the A number. K1 is NOT a "temporary visit visa". It's a fiancee visa with immigrant intent and you DO NOT file an I-130, you simply file I-485 (to adjust status to an LPR).

Interesting, I thought A#s are not given until one becomes a resident in the U.S cos your green card is the first place you see ur A#. and it is called "A" registration number...so I would have thought one is not considered an alien until you step into the country.

Greencard isn't the first place you see it. Its on the NOA2 for K1's at the very least, sometimes also on their visas and sometimes CBP handwrites it on the I-94. Have you checked your NOA2 for the Cr1 to see if it's above the beneficiaries name there?

I am not sure if your post was directed to me but I still have not received my NOA2. I called the national customer office two nights ago and the woman whom I spoke with said my wife had been assigned an A# so we should get our NOA2 soon. But when I called again last night to make sure, the man I spoke with said this is given to everyone as soon as USCIS receives the case. So apparently they either talk about two very different numbers or at least one of is talking nonsense. However, the guy also said that my case had been assigned to an officer and it should be decided soon.

Nope wasn't directed at you, was directed at the person who claims the GC is the first place you see it :)

Still though hopefully you hear something soon :)
