Late edit: I should add that the person using a fake SSN will get caught eventually and be banned from the US for life.

Say I am an illegal alien and I desperately want a job. So I make up a fake SSN out of the blue... 987654321. I go around and get a job pretending to be a US Citizen. I put my fake number on all my paperwork and I work and the Gov takes out taxes and all of this is recorded. The number is totally made up so I think it's not harming anyone. (And, btw, plenty of people come on this site and say they have used fake SSNs and they think it's okay). So, pretend I work for 10 years on this fake SSN. Then a real application for a new number comes up, from a legitimate person. And the number assigned to this real person is 987654321. The SSA number-generating system knows that this number has not been assigned to anyone. However, there is 10 years of work history, loans, credit cards, etc, all attached to this number somehow. There is a problem because there are two names associated with the number. The real person, unfortunately, pays the price.

Thanks for the information. Makes sense. I did dome research and was duptized ti find that SS admin will hold money for social security numbers they know are not valid. WOW.

I don't know if this happened to the OP. To be honest, his English is confusing and it is hard to understand what has happened, and I think many of the details are missing from the story (I think as a new immigrant he might have not gotten all of the clues). But, I think this idea is something he should look into to make sure it didn't happen to him. I think he should make sure his SSN is blank and there is no history on it.

When I was hired, instead of filling out paper, we have to log in to company website and do everything in the computer and there is a program I need to put my SSN (the HR person simply explain it is just a verification if the SSN is valid) and once I entered the number I was nervous cause it clearly says "WARNING" THE NUMBER MAY NOT BE VALID, because my first 3 digit of SSN was only used for railroad workers which was the Social Security office stop using/issuing it since 1963. My heart skip a beat even I know Im not illegal but reading those it's like I am illegal and I don't want the HR person think that I am illegal but she understand cause I have my GC. so she called the company hotline /main office and was resolved. reasons are, their system is not updated and I think the branch office didn't get the memo or aware about the changes. If I wasn't there and had my GC and SSN card they will probably cancel the offer too.

Have you thought that the application form you sent in to Target has the wrong age or birthdate?

Or, have you also thought who ever entered your information in the social security office typed the wrong birthdate?

If I were you, I would follow up with the SSO and verify that they have the right age or birthdate.

Called my Target HR and I'm verified already. If anyone else really needs the job and is waiting on sending out the information to LexisNexis, do it asap. I got verified within 24 hours of sending in scans of my documents.

My hubby had the same "issues" when Rite Aid was doing a background check on him. The HR Manager said his name is not "showing up".

So my husband went to SS office and verified his name. They got his names mixed up so he had it corrected. He presented his Philippine passport and original NSO birth certificate. SS issued him a new card (with the same SS number). He did not pay for anything.

Second, he made an INFOPASS with USCIS. He also got his name corrected. He surrendered his green card. He was scheduled for biometrics. No fee was collected since the error was not his fault, probably done by the immigration officer at his POE (LAX). I think it was after 2 months he got his new green card (with the same number as the first one). His complete and full name already printed on the front of the GC.

He got a job after. :innocent:

"Social Security will advise you when a name and SSN you submitted does not match our records.

This response does not imply that you or your employee intentionally provided incorrect information about the employee's name or SSN.

This response does not make any statement about your employee's immigration status.

This response is not a basis, in and of itself, for you to take any adverse action against the employee, such as laying off, suspending, firing, or discriminating against the employee.

If you rely only on the information SSA provides regarding name and SSN verification to justify adverse action against a worker, you may violate State or Federal law and be subject to legal consequences."

My link

I don't know if you can use this as a basis of hiring discrimination, but I would contact the social security administration about this situation and find out if there is anything you can do to rectify this.

Yes, this is the really relevant issue here, IMO.

Our journey together on this earth has come to an end.

I will see you one day again, my love.
