We know they are against homosexuals, that they are against abortion, and they are not trying to have any illegals(though some employ them on the side) and so forth. However, a slightly more careful analysis of the Civil Rights Act voting record shows a distinct split between Northern and Southern politicians. The modern Democratic Party owes its current character far more to the Northern liberals than to the Dixiecrats. If the old Southern Democrats are to be labeled as racist, then Al Gore and Bill Clinton are Southern Democrats in name only as their defense of civil rights places them solidly among the Northern Democrats and not with the Dixiecrats of old.

In the two decades following the 1960s, the now-notorious “Southern Strategy” begun by Richard Nixon and continued by Ronald Reagan led to an exodus of Southern Democrats to the Republican Party. Those were the Democrats who voted against the emancipating legislation of the civil rights era: the racist, white supremacist Dixiecrat Democrats — not the ones who form the Democratic Party today.

This whole line of reasoning is specious. Democrats are inclusive; they fight for justice for ALL. Republicans are exclusive - justice for the very few at the expense of others (and name-calling and insults to the others too, just like in this forum).

I think inclusivity is the American way - in fact, it was one of the ideas this country was founded on. The Revolutionaries were fighting for rights for all people. Why don't modern republican "patriots" do the same?

I read an article recently that said that people who tend toward the conservative mindset believe that humanity is in a state of decline and that we must do all we can to stop it from declining.

I think that pushing that fear, by telling people that "the world is all changing so get used to it" is not the sort of message that will create unity and partnership, socially or in the political realm.

It seems evident in this thread, that white people are worried that other people will take over and ruin everything for them.

This is not a race issue. I still believe in freedom and justice for all. That's the American way, and that mindset led to what we have had, what we have now, and what we will have.
