Californians are considered foreign partners now? :P

dunno, but they've been acting out-of-synch with the rest of US for many years now.

and darn proud of it too. we like to say we are several steps ahead. B)

:energetic:

several steps ahead is not good when you're headed into a ravine.

(FYI, this is exactly also the way that Ontario is "ahead" of western Canada).

I just stumbled on this, I feel sorry for anyone on the dating scene right now. How do you protect yourself from this?

http://www.myfoxphilly.com/myfox/pages/New...mp;pageId=3.2.1

My fiance read this to me from the paper last night, what I found incredible was one woman was reported in the paper as agreeing to meet him again for lunch a few days after she alleges he raped her and then alleging he drugged and raped her again.

Chuckles,

While this particular incident was domestic, it is exactly the type of incident that is behind the IMBRA.

The second to last paragraph gives us an example of why we have IMBRA.

Yodrak

In truth, that paragraph has nothing to do with IMBRA. That is an American service aimed at Americans. That case in California had nothing to do with immigration, therefore nothing to do with IMBRA. Americans do not have those protections against themselves, only those in other countries have that protection from American predators, if you want to call it that.

Online daters, disappointed by potential partners lying about their age, weight or marital status, are turning to professional matchmakers to find love. .... "Nowadays people have a personal matchmaker in the same way they would have a personal trainer," [dating expert Mary Balfour] said at her Drawing Down the Moon agency in London's Adam and Eve Mews.

Americans importing partners from other countries have the same protection, all foreign partners go through police and security checks. IMBRA, while poorly implemented, just evens things up.

Not exactly. There is no protection for US petitioners against scammers, gold-diggers, and green-card shoppers.

But IMBRA specifically exempts non-international web dating sites, so the majority of the deception and abuse goes on. The IMBRA backers knew they couldn't get IMBRA passed unless they exempted those sites.

The IMBRA people just didn't like the idea of a man in the US finding a "disadvantaged" woman in another country. They also knew they couldn't get IMBRA passed on it's own merits (they tried), so they attached it to VAWA which was sure to pass.

garya,

Yes there is - the dilligent consular officers who we curse to hell when they deny visas or give administrative review to those who we love dearly and honestly believe love us in return.

I guess I'm just skeptical and suspicious, especially when I hear the stories I have heard. An ex-friend of my fiance got engaged to a man from the US, then went back with an ex-boyfriend in her town, got pregnant, and had an abortion a week before her fiance went to pick her up. Of course, before she got the abortion she passed her interview with no problems (I think her BF was with her at the hotel on the interview trip). Oh, and during this time she was also working another guy in the US for money. When someone dropped an anonymous email to the fiance, he asked her if it was true and she denied it so he believed her. Go figure. She's a great actor so I'm sure the CO had no clue of what she was up to. Hmmm, do you think she's a gold-digger? :(

Ya, that's why she's an ex-friend of my fiance now.
