10 things I learned from Hurricane Sandy

1. The apocalypse isn't so bad because there will still be hot running water.

2. Magic is real. How else do I explain all those downed trees and yet not one near my house?

3. It's perfectly normal for your toddler to waddle over pieces of roof shingle.

4. That thing about rain, snow or sleet? Well.. it turns out USPS really meant it. Thanks for all the junk mail guys.

5. Widespread looting in the suburbs? It didn't happen. Thugs today just aren't what they used to be. Too busy talkin' trash on Twitter.

6. Twitter! Facebook! 3G/4G has changed everything. We're always connected, whether we like it or not.

7. Public libraries were offering free mobile device charging stations. Another government handout in broad daylight but the Tea Party was missing. Probably busy talkin' trash on Twitter.

8. Two minutes of idling consumes as much gas as driving a mile. I should have gone to the library, what an inefficient way to charge my smartphone. God forbid I miss any Tweets.

9. Gas lines can be avoided by going to a 24 hour gas station at 3am.

10. Hurricanes are no big deal. Floridians are a bunch of f***ing whiners.

I noticed two things from all the floods we occasionally experience along the Russian River, to add to your list:

1) Land lines almost never go down.

2) The only time I get to meet all my neighbors is when the power is out, and there is nothing better to do, than stand at the water's edge and wait for the water to recede.

I imagine you experienced something similar.
