Brentin Mock: Poll Watchers Are Turning to 'Ridiculous' Voter Suppression Methods

As Americans hit the polls today, some will be told their vote might not be counted. Voting Rights Watch's lead reporter Brentin Mock appeared on Democracy Now! to explain voter suppression efforts across the country, including one poll watcher's challenge of 77 alleged felons in Tampa. Challenged voters won't know their tentative status until they show up to their polling station and they receive a provisional ballot. "This is completely unfair," says Mock.

Oregon election worker fired for altering ballots to Republican straight ticket

An election worker in Oregon is facing a criminal investigation for allegedly altering multiple ballots to benefit Republican candidates.

In a press release on Monday, Clackamas County spokesperson Tim Heider said that 55-year-old Deanna Swenson had been "relieved of duty immediately after the alleged ballot tampering was discovered."

Swenson, who was registered as a Republican, was accused of filling in a Republican straight ticket on ballots where voters did not specify a choice.

Contacted by Willamette Week, Swenson tearfully insisted that it was "only the two" ballots that had been altered.

The Oregon Department of Justice began an investigation last week after an elections official reportedly observed ballots being altered.

"At this point, it is unclear how many ballots the employee at issue had access to, or what will be done with those ballots," the sheriff's office said on Monday.

At a Monday emergency meeting, officials in Clackamas County announced that the altered ballots would not be counted. Since ballots were anonymous, disenfranchised voters would not be given a chance to re-cast their votes.

Swenson has worked in elections since at least 2000, according to the Clackamas County spokesperson.

New Black Panthers back at Philly voting site

A member of the New Black Panther Party who was charged with voter intimidation in the 2008 election for standing outside a Philadelphia polling site was back Tuesday morning – in an official capacity.

Jerry Jackson, who was charged in the 2008 case along with Minister King Samir Shabazz, but later saw charges dropped by the Department of Justice, was seen early Tuesday outside a North Philadelphia voting site wearing the group’s trademark black beret, combat-style uniform and heavy boots. Fox News confirmed he is a designated poll watcher.

“No comment,” Jackson said when approached by a reporter at 1221 Fairmount Ave., in the city’s 14th Ward, where he lurked on Election Day in 2008.

One voter who didn't mind Jackson's presence was Robin Spriggs, 50.

"We need it," she said. "It doesn't matter the color, the creed or anything like that. They protect everyone."

There were also reports of New Black Panther Party members at polling sites in Cleveland, Ohio, where they have also maintained a presence at early voting sites. Critics complain that they are an intimidating presence and could discourage white voters, who may be more likely to vote Republican, from entering polling sites.

Are Somali Pirates Voting in Ohio?

Finally, the billy club-toting New Black Panther Party may have some backup in ensuring that Barack Obama wins a second term. Why? Because it looks like a few Somali pirates may have managed to sneak past Janet Napolitano and are now in Ohio to assist the Democrats in moving America "Forward."

Allegedly, volunteer poll workers in the Buckeye state reported seeing "van loads of Ohio residents born in Somalia" being ferried in to vote early. Once at the polls, in lieu of Republican translators and UN poll watchers, the Democrats themselves were providing Somali/Arabic translation. Seems the Obama campaign is getting out the vote by teaching Somali immigrants the ins and outs of the voting process.

Witnesses at the Columbus, Ohio Morse Road polling center reported Somalis arriving in buses, being handed a slate card, and being told by helpful Democrats to vote "brown," for Senator Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), all the way down the card.

The American Stinker.

I am fairly certain that those Somalis that have been reported to cast votes in Ohio are actually US citizens who were born in Somalia. Much like I am a US citizen who was born in Germany and much like my wife is a US citizen who was born in Ehtiopia. Since we're US citizens, we have the same right to vote as any other US citizen and I am slightly offended by the suggestion of this right wing nut hate site that it isn't so.

New Yorkers will be allowed to vote in any polling place

(Reuters) - New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Monday New Yorkers affected by superstorm Sandy will be allowed to vote in Tuesday's U.S. election in any polling place by presenting an affidavit.

Cuomo said he was signing an executive order on Monday that will allow voters to cast ballots at voting stations other than the ones to which they are assigned. He said his order arose from concern that hundreds of thousands of New York residents could be effectively disenfranchised by the damage to many polling places caused by Sandy one week ago.

"This executive order I am signing today is an extraordinary step in that direction," Cuomo said in a news conference.

Good thing New York and New Jersey are not swing states, with the Democrats busing voters from precinct to precinct.

Mysterious robo calls telling voters today: vote tomorrow

Reports are trickling in from people who’re receiving robo-calls today advising them to vote tomorrow.

At least two of them have come to Orlando residents, both of them Hispanic, raising suspicions about some group trying to confuse certain groups of voters into missing their voting chance, according to a watchdog group called Video the Vote.

People can vote today, not tomorrow.

One such person is Isham Padron, who lives in the Lockhart area of north-central Orange County. He got a call this morning telling him to vote tomorrow. Padron hung up before following the robo-call pitch very far.

He believes it was a voter supression tactic. He already voted, though, by absentee ballot, so it wouldn’t have mattered. But he wonders if anyone else might fall for it.

Earlier today there were reports of similar calls in the Tampa Bay area that were being attributed to the Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections. Turns out the official office was making such calls. Oops.. The office’s automated equipment erroneously sent out hundreds of such calls this morning, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

GOP goes to court to cover Obama mural at polling site

obama_mural110612.jpg

Polling locations are supposed to be nonpartisan. But at one Northeast Philadelphia school, where a large Barack Obama mural stands in the midst of where voters cast their ballots, members of the state's Republican party quickly cried foul.

At the Benjamin Franklin Elementary school on Rising Sun Avenue, in the city's Crescentville section, a large Barack Obama mural is painted on a wall that stands behind two voting booths. The Obama campaign symbol and the words "change and hope" are prominently featured, along with a quote from Obama.

As news of the mural spread Tuesday morning, Republican Party of Pennsylvania Chairman Rob Gleason released a statement accusing the Obama campaign of trying to suppress Republican votes.

"It is clear the Obama campaign has taken their campaign in the gutter to manipulate this election however they can," the statement said. "Based on the Obama campaign's behavior today, it certainly raises the question: what are Democrats doing in the polls that they are working so hard to shield folks from monitoring this election?"

Voter Suppression Enters the Home Stretch

Mike Tomasky writes today about something that a lot of us have spent the past couple of years deploring: the increasingly naked Republican campaign to suppress the nonwhite vote.

Up to now its measures were local and somewhat haphazard—scare-tactic fliers circulated in black neighborhoods, GOP elections officials "forgetting" to ship the right number of voting machines to minority areas, that sort of thing....Now, though, in these past couple of years, the GOP strategy has been institutionalized. It's come above ground, and the thugs in black outfits distributing handbills in the dead of night before Election Day have been replaced or at least supplemented by thugs in suits and ties trying to put a respectable sheen on this obviously anti-democratic business.

This is why NAACP president Benjamin Jealous calls the current Republican tactics "James Crow Esquire": the tactics may not be as as brutal as they were 50 years ago, but the goal is the same. Ed Kilgore, a son of Georgia,

That's probably fitting. This election does, after all, follow a four-year period in which conservatives have gotten into the habit of publicly proclaiming things they used to keep to themselves: anyone receiving any sort of government assistance is a "looter" or a "taker;" poor and minority people "vote themselves welfare;" voting is a "privilege, not a right;" people who don't pay federal income taxes shouldn't be allowed to vote, etc., etc. The desire to suppress votes to one extent or another has gotten deeply into the DNA of a party that considers itself under siege by demographic change.

A judge has ordered that a mural of President Barack Obama be covered up at a Philadelphia polling place after Republicans complained, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Republican National Committee official Tim Miller complained on Twitter that the polling place set up voting booths right next to a mural of Obama. The location of the polling site is 35th ward-D18 Franklin School, according to the Weekly Standard. Miller wrote that the Pennsylvania GOP has filed a complaint.
