Hello,

New to the board and was wondering if anyone could answer a few questions for me. I just got the approval letter from Vermont a couple weeks ago, so we are awaiting for my fiancee to be contacted by the consulate. I am a medical student who was working earlier this year until I began school in August. My salary for the year has already topped the income requirement for support. Based on this information alone, would I still need a sponsor based on the fact that I am no longer employed?

For the second question, I noticed that number 7 on Form I-134 asks to list my employment. However, according to the instructions for the form, one does not need to be employed if one can show that one has the financial resources. This being the case, do I just leave this blank and submit a letter from bank that shows when my account was opened, the total deposits for the year, and the current balance? As I stated, my income for the year already exceeds the required salary. Add to that the loans that I received for medical school, my total deposits would be almost triple the required income for support. Even my medical school loans for the year alone would be more than the required income to show support.

Has anyone had any experience with this situation before? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Medicalstudent

Assets are counted at 3 times, so you would not need 'almost' 3 times the 125% income requirement, you would need a bare minimum of 3 times the income amount. If you can provide the bank statements to prove your assets, then you might be approved while currently unemployed.

It isn't about what you made this year. It is about ongoing current income. You are unemployed, so you currently have no current annual income. As I said, people have sponsored through assets alone, but if using assets alone, it is best to have over the bare minimum. You would not leave the employment portion blank. You would put unemployed, or unemployed/student.

You may want to get a co-sponsor lined up and have their I-134 and supporting documents ready to go in case the consulate decides you need one.

A co-sponsor will need at least 5 times what they are short on income, so he would need at least $5k.
