Hi everyone:

I am a U.S citizen, and I am the only one in my family in the U.S. I have applied for an immigrant visa for my mother. Because I have not made any money, and I have been attending full time school for the past three years, will there be a problem for my mother's case? Someone told me that I will have to provide an affidavit of support? Any idea what that is? I really don't know anyone and I don't know what to do if they were to ask me?

My mother is an older lady can't read or write and I know she won't stay here for mother than 2 or three months. I originally applied for a visit visa for her to see my new born but the an idiot at the embassy rejected her visit visa application on the basis that she will not return back.

An affidavit of support is to prove that an immigrant has the means to take care of themselves. It sounds like you have a spouse and a baby so your household would be 4 people. Also with your mother being older they MAY ask for proof of health insurance above the affidavit of support. If your mom doesn't plan on staying in the US they will probably deny the visa. Your petition is for your mother to live here not visit.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

No affidavit of support = no immigrant visa.

I guess many people will call embassy staff idiots if their loved one's touist visa is not approved, but they are just doing their job. It's your moms responsibility to prove strong ties that she will return home, and she wasn't able to. It's nothing personal, and happens often. She can always reapply with stronger evidence on why she needs to return home after her trip. You can only really blame people who abuse the visa for this.

In your other thread you only just applied for asylum- that doesn't make you a US citizen. Which are you?
