Could anyone advise me on the following, please

I used to live in USA some time ago. I worked and had a social security number. Then I left to my home country. Now I am back to USA on K-1 visa. I got married to my fiance last week. Today I went to Social Security Office to get my married name on my SSC just as as clerk at the City Hall had told me when we were applying for marriage licence. But I wasn't able to change anything ((( Lady at SS office told me that I first need to change my name with Homeland Security. I don't know who is right, and what is the right way for me to act. Also, next week I was planning to get my US driving licences updated with my married name. Won't I be able to have them changed as well until I have work permit or green card?

Thanks in advance

I got the same answer from a SSA employee. Apply for AOS/EAD/AP as soon as you can. Once you get your EAD or green card, whichever comes first, go back to the SS office with it and your marriage certificate. You will then receive a new SS card a few weeks later.

You may have the same problem with your DL. But that's not a problem, you can still drive. :)

My wife applied for SSN 5 days after she got here, and received her card a week later. We got married yesterday and took our marriage cert down to SS office to have it change to her married name. Their system wouldn't let them to change it. The people worked there made copies of my wife passport, and marriage cert to send it to Homeland and have it change. We'll know the answer in 4 weeks.

They made it pretty clear to me that "their system won't let them do it" but I wasn't given an option to submit any documents. She told me I needed to change my name with Homeland security on my own.. this is what I am going to do, in other words applying for AOS
