CDC considers it a disease.

Dependency on alcohol, also known as alcohol addiction and alcoholism4, is a chronic disease. The signs and symptoms of alcohol dependence include—

  • A strong craving for alcohol.
  • Continued use despite repeated physical, psychological, or interpersonal problems.
  • The inability to limit drinking.

Addiction is due 50 percent to genetic predisposition and 50 percent to poor coping skills. This has been confirmed by numerous studies. One study looked at 861 identical twin pairs and 653 fraternal (non-identical) twin pairs. When one identical twin was addicted to alcohol, the other twin had a high probability of being addicted. But when one non-identical twin was addicted to alcohol, the other twin did not necessarily have an addiction. Based on the differences between the identical and non-identical twins, the study showed 50-60% of addiction is due to genetic factors.(1) Those numbers have been confirmed by other studies.(2)

To Whom It May Concern: [...] William D. Silkworth, M.D.
It's a pleasure bordering on joy to read stuff written by earlier-era doctors who obviously had classical educations and knew how to WRITE. I frequently encounter writings like this in my work, and I can become engrossed in the writing style even if the topic itself wouldn't otherwise have interested me. Thanks so much for posting this, si man. Edited by TBoneTX

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Technically, it is both. Alcoholism is certainly a disease, just as diabetes type II, and both diseases are caused by poor life choices. I don't think calling it a disease absolves any responsibility of the alcoholic for their disease, any more than telling someone who has diabetes. We all have a certain amount of responsibility over our health, but that shouldn't be a barrier to getting help in treating the disease.

So in your view, you see no reason why people afflicted with Alcoholism ... should not collect social security if it "disables" them from working?

What kind of slippery slope are you on, Danno? Should a guy who drove his motorcycle recklessly and crashed, debilitating him to where he can no longer work be able to claim disability? How about a guy who happens to like red meat too much, has a stroke and is paralyzed, should he be able to claim responsibility? Are you in the best possible shape right now and if not, are you going to claim disability should, God forbid, you are struck with a medical condition prevents you from working?

Why is it Liberals are so damm principled but they can never just answer a question.

It takes minimum three posts to drag it out ....if it even comes then.

Yes or no steve- Do you think people who have a drinking problem should collect or not?

If Steve stubbed his toe he would "blame" the sidewalk. They can never take responsibility for anything that happens. The whole narrative is BS!

Example:We hear about all these kids are starving but yet why arent the parents of these children being arrested for neglect? Here in lies the rub. The guilt trip is the tactic. Dont bite.

So, the problem is liquor stores and bars? I tend to agree. God damn the pusher man!

What, did those very real and very relevant questions about personal responsibility trip you up, Danno? Don't get mad. Answer those question and there's your answer.
