How is the best way to call China? I called my phone company and was shocked to hear the rates.

I use my local phone company, they charge me 0.10 each minute day or night.

You can use Skype to call. My husband bought me an Unlimited World subscription and it works great! It's less than $15 a month and its unlimited.. I even have it on my smart phone. Just try it out.

I also use Skype, the unlimited makes it worthwhile, and I call every day.

my cell provider has a 10 buck/month call to china and se asia, but i got in on the 5/month promotion and I'm grandfathered. I also use google voice at 2/cents minute - it calls me first (landline or cell) and connects the call. Gotta use a computer or smartphone with webbrowser to initiate the call, though.

Thanks everyone for your replies and much needed help for me. I think we're going to give the Skype thingy a shot first and see how that works for us. I told her about it last night and I got a big pretty smile from her.

It is worth looking at ITalkBB http://www.italkbb.com/bb/enu/enu_index.asp.

The advantage is you get a Chinese number that can be called by a cell phone on the Mainland and rings in your house here in the US.

My wife and I use it. It allows her father to call her here in the US though he doesn't have a computer.

Just one more to add, Google voice is convenient for calls when you don't want to use a data connections/wifi. iPhones/Android you can even set it up so it calls international numbers via google voice automatically. Calls to China mobile $0.02/minute.

if you have vonage service, you can download an app called vonage extension on android (not sure if it's available on iOS), which allows you to make calls to china with your cellphone acting as an extension of your home/office vonage service free of charge.

The call itself does not need data/internet connectivity, but to initiate the call, your cell needs to be connected to the internet.

If you are with AT&T and have an Android or iPhone, use this app called AT&T Call international, they charge you aprox. 04cents per minute, its a wonderful app and I've used it everyday. I don't talk very much, but usually rack a 10-15 dollar bill a month charged to my debit card, which isn't too bad.

Otherwise, use QQ international for video, voice and chat messaging. Skype is great but won't work as well as I've come to find out. Every time I've tried Skype, it has always cut out on me and I think it might be due to some restrictions due to the Great Firewall of China(Internet restrictions in china).
