My wife (beneficiary) and I (petitioner) filed Form I-485 a few months ago, and we have received a letter for both of us to appear in person in a few days. I have some questions - would really appreciate some insight!

1) Social Security Number (SSN) -- I just checked these links (http://www.visajourney.com/content/k1flow) and (http://www.visajourney.com/content/ssn) and I did not know that K1 Visa Holders could apply for an SSN. It was never in any documents I received, but I did read this on the VisaJourney links above. So my wife's I-94 has expired, we filed the I-485 form before the 90 day mark, but we did not apply for an SSN for her. She drives on an international driving license and our bank added her to my bank account based on the marriage certificate, passport, etc. She also started taking classes at a community college and they don't require one either (we pay out-of-state tuition here in California). My questions are:

- Are we in trouble now when we go in for our interview in a few days, or is this not a huge deal (due to not applying for a SSN)?

- Should we / can we try to apply for one before our interview in a few days?

- Any advice from me on this? I'm getting worried, but I had no idea about this - can only find this info on those VJ links above

2) Green card processing time

- How long will this green card take to process should everything go well at our interview? My wife and I would like to travel internationally in mid-December and want to see how possible this will be. I have everything I need on the checklist the USCIS sent along with the interview date and time.

3) Anything else I need to know about, or any advice for me?

1. SSN is not a requirement. I am not sure why you think you;d be in trouble.

2. If you are approved at interview, the IO can order production of the card the same day, or even stamp your wife's passport with a stamp that says she is a Permanent Resident. On the other end of the scale, your file could be held for more processing or further interviews that can drag on for many more months. So, there is no set processing time after the interview, it all depends on the case's individual merits. Judging from the fact that your wife is from a very low-fraud country and has already been vetted in the K-1 visa, I would guess you will be approved sooner v. later. The GC takes about 10 business days to be in your hand after the production is ordered.

3. No special gotchas, no.

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!
