Criminal Background Check

So my fiance and I just started our K1 VISA (just got our NOA1 from CSC this past week) and my question is when should we be putting though a criminal background check? Is it to early to do it now and at least have that process underway (as it may take up to 9 weeks by mail to get it). I just am not sure if there's a particular period of time that the record check needs to be within for the consulate to consider it valid.

Thoughts?

Do you mean the police certificate for the interview stage? If so you should see what the validity period is. It varies depending on the embassy in Chile we have to get it 2 months before the interview or else it is not considered valid anymore. I've seen other countries have expiration dates anywhere from 2 - 6 months from the date you got the certificate. Good luck

You go through a FBI background check when they accepted your petition that is why it takes so long to get your NOA2. The police certificate is for your beneficiary only not the US citizen, and they take that to their interview. There is another background screening before they issue the visa. I hope that this answers your question, it is kind of confusing. Make sure that you post this question in your regional section.

For the Philippines, the NBI clearance has validity of 1 year.

Good luck!

When I was doing my K-1 in 2009, I went to the local RCMP detachment and got my criminal records check in January, right after our NOA2 showed up. I didn't end up going for my interview in Vancouver until the end of April, so I was a little curious as to whether I might have to redo the criminal records check, which had an expiration date written on it of 6 months. So I emailed Vancouver about it (VancouverK@state.gov - they will get back to you within 48 hours and were very helpful, if somewhat terse), and they said that criminal records checks are considered valid by the consulate for one year, no matter what they say on them.

I don't think that's likely to have changed, but you could always email them and ask if you're worried.

DON'T PANIC
