‘We Need Food, We Need Clothing’: Staten Island Residents Plead for Help 3 Days After Sandy

The residents of Staten Island are pleading for help from elected officials, begging for gasoline, food and clothing three days after Sandy slammed the New York City borough.

Staten Island officials sounded increasingly desperate today, asking when supplies will arrive. They blasted the Red Cross for not being there when it counted.

“This is America, not a third world nation. We need food, we need clothing,” Staten Island Borough President Jim Molinaro said today. “My advice to the people of Staten Island is: Don’t donate the American Red Cross. Put their money elsewhere.”

Yeah, it was 5 days after Katrina when the Feds poured in to help and now it has been almost a week and nothing from the Feds. These people are cold to boot! A hurricane in November in New York is not the same as one in August in New Orleans. Big risk of death from hypothermia but who cares? Not Obama. No electricity, no transportation, no gasoline, no heat, no food. Onlyu under Obama could people starve and freeze to death in New York.

Shall we even mention that there has been no school which means no food for school kids!

I blame his global warming initiative also for reducing the earth's temperature and causing storms to go farther north (Irene last year and now this) Is it a coincidence the last two major hurricanes have hit New England? I think not. This is obviously Obama's doing and the Democrat congress. This is what we get for fixing global warming.

Obama can kill Muslims by remote control in Pakistan but he cannot get food and water to New York? What kind of leader is he?

And he is in an election and knew this could be a feather in his cap. There should have been an armada of C-5s and CH-47s pouring supplies and aid into New York and New Jersey as soon as the storm clouds broke. The same day or next day at latest. Special teams from the military can help to restore power and bring generators. If he can power a WAR in Afghanistan, why not a drug store in New York?

I did just see your comment under site discussion. I personally wouldn't have moved it but is it a repeating situation? I remember that the one organizer who was stripped was doing it maliciously and on a daily basis.

Last year Hurricane Irene ripped threough Vermont and isolated people in 13 towns, completely cut them off. The morning after the storm, within HOURS, the Vermont National Guard was landing supplies in those towns. Local contractors were sending men and equipment and material...our company dispatched 7 men and trucks and construction equipment...Gratis, Mr. Governor! Our liberal Democrat, gun owning, bear hunting Governor tried to get helpp from FEMA and was put on hold. He contacted his good friend the Premier of QUEBEC and within hours had convoys of Hydro Quebec trucks and crews pouring in and THAT was an impressive sight. By Friday, 3 days fater the storm, all the towns were reconnected to civilization, power was restored.

Burlington was realtively spared and the airport was the base for the National Guard. The helicopters were coming and going all week, all day, all night. They were also operating Blackhawks out of the Fletcher Allen Healthcare heliport bringing in medical supplies.

FEMA showed up a few months later, useless as balls on a brass monkey and started denying claims for aid. FEMA is not only useless, as we see over and over, it is an embarrassment.

This business needs to be given back to the states and let the Feds support where needed. FEMA has been a total waste

Where's the boats ?

It'd be cool to boat these folks off the island, move them up or down the coast to where there's food and electricity.

Whilst they're at it, have a mobile FEMA station ON the boat, processing the applications for emergency aid.

Apparently a human can get monies for temporary housing, paying for a hotel, etc.

There be boat ports up and down the coast - come on FEMA - move them people out !
