Today I noticed some interesting info regard jobs and our company. We are a small firm (about 10 people), and a project manager is leaving by Thanksgiving. A few days ago we put up an ad for the job and thus far have 3 replies.

When I joined the company 2 years ago, I was one of 40 applicants (same position). The next hire after me was entry level and had 60 applicants. About three months ago we put an ad up for entry level and received about 20.

I was quite shocked to see the difference. This isn't a partisan post, I'm not necessarily crediting the government but things seem to be better.

I think there are two factors, one positive and one negative that are lowering the numbers. First local unemployment is way down from peak levels....probably in the 5-6% range. I also think that a percentage of the labor force has "disappeared" and in the future we will see a shadow in terms of age/experience.

Or maybe Obama has put so many on Food stamps and welfare, and with free Insurance right around the corner everybody has said to heck with it .

I remember the first job that was posted externally in our firm (large firm) after the economic slide was stopped 2-3 years back. We had several hundred applications against that single job opening. It was messy. These days, we're having a difficult time finding qualified people for anything above an entry level position. There sure are plenty of college grads out there looking for a job but when it comes to qualified personnel with relevant experience - it's rather tough. Times have certainly changed. For the better no doubt because no, it's not that people prefer a life on food stamps over a $40K - 50K entry level job as our RWN would suggest.
