In the final days of the campaign in Ohio, the stops have been pulled out in the scramble to eke out a win. And that means one super PAC calling on African Americans to vote against President Obama because Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves.

Cable viewers in several markets across the state are being treated to ads by an obscure self-described “alternative conservative” super PAC called the Empower Citizens Network. One of the group’s ads accuses Obama and Democrats of imploding the economy by forcing mortgage companies to lend to “unqualified borrowers” while the Soviet national anthem plays. Another promises welfare recipients that “Republicans can save your money source” by reducing regulations on business.

And then there’s the ad which one viewer told TPM is airing in the Columbus area on cable. Our source caught it a couple of times on MSNBC. That ad is the Empower Citizens Network spot that tells African Americans it’s a “lie” that Democrats support them and cites the Emancipation Proclamation as evidence.

They should add that Democrats filibustered the Voting Rights and Civil Rights Act, promote the exploitation and trafficking of humans for corporate profit, the oppression of blacks with dependency on government and subsidized abortion to kill minority babies.

Also mention the gerrymandering of congressional districts to reduce the influence of blacks far below their actual proportion of the population so that white congressman can ignore the concerns of black voters.

Talk about bait and switch. This thread is about a political ad by a GOP super pac targeting African American voters. Any of you trolling would care to discuss the topic, feel free. But every post so far is off topic.

Which part did you want to talk about? Do you dispute that Lincoln was a Republican? Or that the Democrat party was the party of slaveholders?

And Gary's post is very much on topic, but I guess it went way over your head. The point is that the Democrat party hasn't really changed. You seem to be implying (although you managed to really say very little) that the racial positions of the parties in the 19th century are irrelevant. I could agree if the positions had changed significantly. Gary's point is that they haven't.

The great society has done more to keep the blacks "in their place" than any other effort of the last century. You changed the plantation for the "projects with the breakdown of the black family and the prisons where the black man is still in "chains". All thanks to the master plantation boss LB Johnson.

Here's the way I see it, there is going to be racism on both sides, but if the Republicans want more minorities, then stop with the racial dog whistling. I can't remember the last time a Democratic government official said/did something racial, but for the other side? I've lost count. Then people like Ann Coulter come along and say it's the libs lying and the republicans would love to have more minorities.

Perhaps you should actually look at the video, and decide for yourself, instead of relying on a biased article reference in the OP.

I wonder why Steven does not cite his sources.

I've read the article when the Root covered it about a week ago. I think that the core beliefs of the republicans is easy enough to relate to, small governemnt, earn your way, keep your money, and bigger military(yay). But when you look at every single racist statement coming out of someone's mouth, whose party are they in? And we are not talking about Joe the Plummer here, we are talking about prominent members of the Republican party. Now to be fair the Democrats aren't without scandal: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_Weiner_sexting_scandal, http://www.ijreview.com/2012/08/12246-the-top-25-democrat-scandals-the-media-wont-discuss/25/, but if minoritites had to choose, where do you think they would go?

This ad is based on the same falsehood Gary and much of the RWN sphere keep peddling. It wasn't Republicans that freed the slaves and passed the voting rights and civil rights acts. It was non-southerners that did that. Fact is that the support and opposition on these matters did not break along party lines, it broke along regional lines.

First, party lines and regional lines are not completely uncorrelated. Pre-civil war, the Democratic party was powerful in the South while the Republican party formed in the North. There were northern Democrats, but they were a minority.

Second, as the Civil War progressed, the Democrat party in the North split into "War Democrats" and "Peace Democrats." In the election of 1864, the "War Democrats" (those that though freeing the slaves was worth fighting a war over) largely joined the Republican party and contributed to the re-election of Lincoln. The "Peace Democrats" are the precursors to the modern Democrat party, which opposed the war and the emancipation proclamation.

Today, what were your southern Democrats are all Republicans. You may not have noticed but the south is pretty red. It's ridiculous to suggest that today's Republicans resemble the party of Abraham Lincoln.
