Am looking at proposing to my girlfriend of two years this Christmas when i go over to the US, possibly getting married in the US the week after or maybe my next visit out early in the New Year. I'm a UK citizen, she's US citizen.

1. I will be taking her surname when we get married, im presuming on the G325 form i fill out i put my new name as main one and then my old name in the "all other names used" space ?

2. When i return to the UK i presume that the marriage certificate will be enough needed for me to get a new passport with my new surname on ?

3. When i enter the US, i realize i am not allowed on their benefit system, does this also mean i cant get any of what free medical care there is there ?

4. DO i have to take a driving test out there or just take along my driving license when i apply for a US license ?

5. Re the I-864 forms from my girlfriend and her father, do i get the originals off them and take them along to the interview myself or are these filled in and sent to the NVC by my girlfriend ? (ive read the guide and it says they get sent off AND i have to take them to the interview, just need clarification)

6. Can i visit the US under an ESTA while my visa application is going through ?

7. How do people attach papers together in the I-130 package, paperclips ?

I realize a few of the above things are far away but im just trying to prepare well in advance.

Thanks

You are a man and you will be changing your surname? Is that even allowed? There is no such thing as free anything in this country. You will not be entitled to government healthcare or any programs for food or welfare assistance.

Of course its allowed, its only classed as a tradition that the female takes the name, you dont even have to change any names if you dont want!

1. YES

2. Country specific question, someone will answer

3. No, you are not entitled to anything free. Why would you be?

4. Depends on the state you are moving too, google the state you will be living in and "DMV" to see what the requirements are

5. Your girlfriend will complete them and send them off to NVC. Look at LingChe's short cuts here on VJ

6. Yes, but nothing is a guarentee, including entrance and duration of stay

7. We used paperclips, but have you read the guides?

good luck

Many , well MOST, men do not take the woman's surname after marriage.

What's up ? Why to change it ?

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

1. Yes. Make sure her state permits a male surname change. if they do not, you will not be able to do it.

2. Depends. In Australia for example it wasn't enough. I had to do an official name change. Also as you're a male, this might not be permitted in your country. You'll need to look into it.

3. If it's not federally means tested you can...

4. You will need to take the test. This changes from state to state and you will be permitted to drive on your UK licence for a short time, but you'll need to see how long you're allowed to, and what your state requires to get a drivers licence. Usually it's an EAD and that takes 60-90 days from filing. Many states only permit 30 days to drive on a foreign licence (or so) so there will be a period, most likely, where you can't drive

5. Not sure about CR-1 process

6. Yes. But they might not let you in as the spouse of a USC you have immigrant intent.

7. It's a personal thing.

very cool ! I've some friends that have done the same thing (man takes the wife's name) but it wasn't across borders.
