i used it almost every day for 3 years when my wife was still in Manila

it was very rare for us to not get a message from one another

not saying it never happened buy was rare. not sure why you had trouble with it

could it be your ISP?? i was on verizon at the time with one of those little "sticks" that goes in a laptop

It's the phone app that does this to me, when I'm at my PC it works fine (however I'm not really at my desk too often so I usually chat through my phone). It may be my phone, I dunno, but I use Verizon for it as well.

I've been using chikka with my husband ever since. I used it now to send text messages to my family in the Philippines. A little bit delay sometimes but it's free and I can communicate with them thru text messages however they got charge 2 pesos to reply to me per message sent which is still fine because the pay more when they reply in my carrier.

I got a Smart SIM with roaming (from eBay) and have it in my old iPhone 4. Text to me are free, but it cost 20php to send text! I went through almost 2 1000php e-loads before I decided to start looking for a cheaper option.

I tried Chikka first, but since she was not replying after the first several messages it stopped working. So, then I tried Skype SMS. They are much cheaper at around 6 cents per text. That seems to be working for now. I may try some other texting options suggested here.

I got her an iPhone, so hopefully when she gets it we can text for free (except data charges). I see others have done that as well.

Does anyone know how iMessage and Facetime work from the Philippines over 3G?

Apple device to Apple device are free. Can be Ipod, Iphone or Ipad. Turn off the SMS in settings and enable Imessage. Like I said, photos, video and text. Added bonus of yahoo, skype and every other app if you're using the phone or pad.

It's been nice to send videos and photos at anytime of the day, while at work, out and about, I really can't imagine having been apart without it.

I love APPLE, esp now that Facetime can be used via the 3G and 4G network, unlike before in which it relies mainly on WiFi connectivity, now, even when we're on the road, we can still use Facetime and call back to my relatives back at the Philippines,...

If I can only express my gratitude to Steve Jobs for creating Facetime, I really would,...

Coz before we got here in the US, Facetime was the only way for me to see my queen,...

Now comes iMessage, iMessage is a messaging system, it is FREE between apple products, its sort of the BBM
