Tax Returns

Hello All,

I have my N400 interview in two weeks. I am applying under the 5 year rule. I understand that I am required to bring IRS tax information from the past 5 years.

So far I have obtained documentation from the IRS in both types, "Account Transcript" and "Return Transcript" via the IRS phoneline.

My question is: Which one of these forms does USCIS require for my inteview? and do these need to be certifed?

The IRS mailed me "Account transcripts" for all 5 years prior, but I could only obtain "Return transcripts" for the past 4 years.

Has anyone had any issues using either of these type of forms for supporting evidence?

Any advice or input from people who have had experience with this would be greatly appreciated.

We used only tax return transcripts. Unless the IRS made significant revisions to your filing, I wouldn't think that the tax account transcripts are necessary. The idea is that the USCIS doesn't want photocopies of the tax forms that you filed out; those are too easy to write up and sign (but not send into the IRS)--the USCIS wants to know what you actually sent to the IRS. That is the purpose of the transcripts. It tells the USCIS what you told the IRS and when.

I personally prefer the account transcripts. They're much shorter. As finances aren't an issue anymore (they're just making sure you've filed), then i wouldn't think it matters which one you choose. When showing income though, apparently the return transcripts are the preference.

Stepdaughter's IO never want to see her tax nor grade transcripts, but did want to see proof I paid a 50 dollar traffic violation fine that was four years ago at the time she had her interview. That caused a delay, her entire interview was less than ten minutes long.

N-400 never said you had to bring tax transcripts for the five year, did anyway just in case. All that was required was the form, check, copy of her green card, and two passport photos they never used.

If they do require, they will ask for tax return transcripts. However, in your situation (only 4 years of t. r. transcripts), having account transcripts is the second best option. They actually show if you still owe any money or not after balance adjustment. Do not worry in any case and good luck!
