Hi guys. Hub and I got married few days ago in LA county and we were told by the commissioner after the ceremony that we'll receive our copy of the marriage certificate in 6 TO 8 WEEKS. However, he gave us the CUSTOMER COPY of our marriage certificate. I wonder if that CUSTOMER COPY will be good enough to submit for my AOS? If not, has anyone here got married in Los Angeles or has any idea how we can [possibly have a marriage certificate faster? I have called the county clerk where we got married but she told me that i have to wait for 6 to 8 weeks! I dont wanna believe her though. I need to file my AOS asap/ Im dying to get a job. I feel so sad and depressed every time I was left alone at home while hubby's at work. :(

If it's a certified copy (raised seal, signature of the custodian of the record on it) then yes. If not, then no.

They said the same thing on the SF county clerk website, but it didn't take that long.

I had to wait 10 days after our wedding, to order some certified copies. They arrived a few days later.

Did you already request some and pay the fees? Because it's not automatic.

That's the part we're a li'l confused about.. When we had our marriage LICENSE, the woman on the county clerk asked us if we should want to have a copy of the marriage certificate and we said yes. so we paid $104, 90 was for the license and 14 was for the certificate. But she gave us this pink slip and forms to be notarized if we would want to request another copy by mail... Im confused.. Do we still have to drive by a county clerk's office and request for a certificate? ANd if yes, how soon can we do that? thanks.

Well, I'm not familiar with the process in LA, so I can't tell you for sure. Looks like you paid for it so I would say you have nothing to do.

Something that I noticed is that they often tell you it's going to take X weeks, but most of time, it's the maximum waiting time.

Is it the only document missing to send your AOS/EAD (and AP?) package?

BTW, you should have requested at least 2 copies, because you're going to send one with your AOS, and you will need another one to show to the SSA when you'll want to update your name on your SS card (if you changed your name).

Oh yeah? Well maybe we'll just haveto get another oe.. Drop by a local county clerks office after 10 days..

Have no idea what else do I need or missing for the AOS. Im just starting to check things that I'll nedd and I guess " to start" is the hardest part about any process. Im almost buried with a pile of papers here! Got to do a lot of reading.. sigh..

Thanks for the help!

You should only send a photocopy with the AoS, and the SSA will usually return the one you show them to you after they have made their own copy.

So only one is needed.

I was confused as you are about the certified copy of the certificate.;)

Then I read somewhere on here that it works a little bit different in CA ( maybe in other states as well ). Apparently, you never get the original certificate because it remains with the city. All the city clerk will send you is a copy which will automatically be a certified copy. And if you want more certified copies, you can request them later. Asking them right now, won't help much, I'd assume. They need some time to receive it, put you into the system, print it, send it, hence the 10 business days.

For the package, I made copies of my "certified copy" and send it off with all the documents because the instructions state that copies are okay. I will take the original "certified copy" to the interview though.

You only need to send a copy of the certified marriage certificate you get from the court. Bring the actual one you get from the court with you to your interview, if you have one.

Hello, we got married in Los Angeles as well. We received the same Customer Copy that you have. I sent the customer copy knowing of an RFE risk to avoid waiting for certified certificate, and sure enough we received RFE. By the time we received the RFE we had already received the ceritified certificate by mail. It took roughly 7 weeks to receive it. Sent back RFE the very next day.
