Hello everyone!

My fiancee who is an American citizen just filed our I-129F petition the other week. We met at university in Pittsburgh which I attended on a student visa (less than two years ago). Now I'm at school here in Canada until May 2013 and she is working in Pittsburgh. She has a ton of student debt, and since I'm in school, I don't have much money either. We wrestled with which visa to apply for (we thought about having an early wedding) and eventually decided on the K1 visa. Now, I'm faced with the fact that there will be a lot more fee's for work authorization and residency. I know I can't apply for the spouse visa and the fiancee visa, but would it be worth it to get married soon, scrap our K1 petition and file for the spouse visa? Would we be saving enough money and headache getting work authorization to justify it? Or am I making myself crazy thinking about this?

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the forum.

The decision whether to start one visa process or the other is a very personal one, one that can only be answered by you and your fiancee. If you haven't yet, you should check out the visa comparison charts. They can be easily accessed by hitting the "Guides" button, conveniently located at the top of the forum page. Hopefully those charts can help you make your decision.

Good luck on your visa journey.

If you have already filed the K1 then that is the way to go. No sense wasting money. Filing a spousal visa now would be just as expensive once you fore fitted the K1 fee
