Stina, your point is well taken. You can call me on this, but I don't think you'll catch me taking a one-liner that Bush verbally fumbles on and make a judgment as extreme as, "Bush bashes our troops." There's a fine line between criticism of what they say and drawing such outrageous assumptions about their character. Kerry is a decorated war veteran - so to call him a troop basher is insulting, never mind that it's a blatant lie.

steven, he was co-opted by the anti war movement after vietnam. whether he was "decorated" is immaterial in what he says, the fact is he went to a country we was at war with (north vietnam) - which should have resulted in him being tried for treason.

that he's bashing the troops and calling into question their integrity and honor is what i'd call insulting.

Thats because no one cares about that. I know I don't.

Indeed – but surely if you (and I’m not saying you do) feel passionately about those issues, and I know you do about one at least – stem cell research, the existence of such legislation signed into law by W (as Texas governor) would appear to call into question his resolve and general honesty on ALL of those issues. But I’m sure there’s another interpretation that I’m overlooking.

I am not in opostition of stem cell research. I just don't think the government should be paying for embryonic stem cell research. If a private company wants to pay a woman for her eggs and then do research then more power to them. There is no conflict there. I oppose abbortion also. But as long as the courts say it is legal then they have the right. But I also have the right to not want my tax dollars to go for it. I am not in favor of euthinatia. But I also don't think that someone that helps someone kill themselves,I.E. doctor prescribed pills, should be charged for that.

All of this furor over one little word. If you look at the context, what he was saying before and after, he clearly was addressing the President, not the troops. Compare that momentary brain fart with what regularly spews forth from the CINC:

A well known saying:

"Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me."

What Bush (W) said:

"There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again."

Kerry is not a "scumbag" and he does not disrespect the troops.

Quit perpetuating lies. Or is that all you Republicants and conservatives can do nowadays? After all, the conservative record is pretty fscking bad.

oh! ok. thanks, that helps. don't agree with the connection, but at least now i understand Marc's thought process for that specific statement. which leads me back to the original argument about kerry haitng america. assuming kerry has this lust for power, does that make him a hater of america? isn't that he wants to have 'power' over/of? i don't see how hating america would help him with that. anywhoos, thanks for the clarification.

I'm going to describe it in Canadian terms, so you'll understand better.

Trudeau certainly (by 1960's) had ambitions to be PM of Canada--and then showed his contempt/hatred of it in 1982 (in full view of cameras from CBC).

Mulroney also had ambitions to be at least potential PM as early as 1982 (and as he showed this AFTER Trudeau's gesture, you can remove "potential", as he knew that Trudeau's party was headed for hammering). His attempt to impose Meech Lake Accord (giving Quebec, but not other provinces, just-short-of-independence without the responsibilities) demonstrated his hatred for Canada--and was also a factor in his party being reduced to TWO seats in 1993.

IMO, both of these hated Canada well prior to their becoming PM.

So, I can see how Kerry would want power over US while hating his own country.
