Walmart: cheap - Ikea: economical - Sears/Macys: expensive. Some local furniture stores offer a whole room of furnishings for $1500 and a "free TV". Really cheap: second hand shop like the Salvation Army.

Thanks Lena. Sorry I didn't make it clear. I would like to know if anybody has shipped their furniture over and how much it costs to ship them...

You need to contact a moving company (removal company in GB?) and they will give you an estimate based on the size of your household. They normally don't charge by piece so much as they calculate the size of a container needed to accommodate all items. It is only really worth it if you have good expensive furniture, otherwise you are better off buying it new here.

I have a decent amount of experience with international shipping of trade show exhibits so I can tell you this much:

For my client to get (1) 56x26x11"h case at 100lbs from the US to london, it was around $800 and included temporary clearance.

Unless you have a lot of expensive furniture to where the shipping cost does not outweigh the value, it's never recommended. There are cheaper options which include boats, but you are waiting weeks for that stuff. Also, in your case for furniture, you probably don't have another choice EXCEPT a boat because you can't fit that stuff on an aircraft.

Doing a very quick google search, I've seen people say that a typical 20ft container has cost anywhere from $4k-$5k to boat overseas.

This is a much-discussed topic in the UK sub-forum. There's a long-running (4+ years!) thread that is still active, and contains many recommendations. http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/128548-yes-its-another-shipping-thread/

I used Excess Baggage 5 years ago and was very happy with their service. I shipped 30 boxes, no large furniture, but it was a LOT of stuff. Read the thread and feel free to ask questions in there -- many of us have been through it and can give you some guidance. star_smile.gif
