Nope. It's a priciple of knowing the rules of a company when you are hired. You can try and find alternate employment if you wish to.

and "people like us" don't pick up the tab. People who pay cash on the other hand do. If you have health insurance, you're not paying for the non-payers at the hospital. It doesn't work that way. The insurance companies don't allow it. A hospital can bill what they want, but insurance companies pay negotiated rates. It's the cash customers who get screwed over and the hospitals who have to write-off the dollars at the end of the year.

According to your rationale, it is the cash customers who stand the benefit the most from the HCR.

Incidentally, the negotiated rate between insurance companies and the providers already include the operational cost, which takes into consideration the forecast for the year, so in that sense, in our health insurance premiums we are already paying for all those unpaid bills hospitals can't action.

So you honestly believe that a company that gives their "part time" employees 37 hours a week are doing so simply because they can't afoord to pay them the full 40? You should know better than that. They're doing it to skirt around paying their employees full time benefits, and in turn putting more money in their pockets. Too many companies are too greedy and operate at their employees expense while raking in the cash. They need to comply and treat their employees to the current standards. I'm not a fan of the modern day unions, but this is the type of thing that made them as powerful as they are.

If a company cannot make money and comply with the system, then maybe that company shouldn't be in business to begin with.

Absolutely not! It is the duty of the people to keep these unfit business alive for the sake of the business owner.

It is downright laughable to see everyone defending trickle down communism in this thread.

Hence the quotes around employee. You can definitely pay someone a rate per hour for their services and then give them a 1099 quarterly/yearly.

Misidentifying an hourly wage earner as an independent contractor, when you regularly schedule his hours, assign his duties, and provide all tools and materials necessary to perform his job means you will eventually have to write a big check to the IRS and state government, as well as face an expensive civil suit, when the employee realizes how much you could owe him, for missed breaks, overtime, etc.

Maybe I should get a lawyer. I wonder what the statute of limitaions is on something like that?

I'm going to guess this is why California chooses to employ so many illegals...?

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Odd, that's how cable and internet installations work around here. Many of these folks used to work for Verizon but now they're independent contractors doing nothing but working for Verizon installing their cable packages in residences.

Do they provide their own tools, set their own hours? Do they get paid a commission, or flat rate per job?

They get paid by the job, I believe. Not sure whose tools they use.

Funny you mention Verizon. That is who I am on a contract with now. On paper I actually work for an outsourcing company, but I've only been there in person once. I report to the same Verizon facility every day. I did this before for 2.5 years. For some reason that is the limit. I think it has something to do with a DOL lawsuit against Microsoft years ago. I left for 1.5 years and came back. I get paid an hourly rate W-2 with no benefits. No paid holidays, no vacation, no healthcare etc. The way it used to work, you could be on contract for 2.5 years and then you had to leave for a year before they could bring you back. Now they changed it so that you can be here 2.5 years, and then only have to leave for 6 months.

Recently they brought on a new V.P. that is talking about converting us to regular full time Verizon employees. We'll see I guess. 95% of the people I worked with the first go round were H1B workers from south Asia. Personally I think the only reason I got a shot the first time, is that I spent alot of time working in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh etc. so I was familiar with their cultures etc.

I guess this is not really relative to the OP, but this is what alot of telecom companies are doing these days. These contractors just rotate from AT&T to Verizon, to Nokia, to whoever. Funny thing is it takes approx. 6 weeks to get setup with a laptop, email, some basic training etc. So that is money wasted by the company.

All that said, the hourly rate is pretty good. I'm not complaining by any means, especially in this economy.

I did that as an IT person for 2 years. Worked for a Dallas based outsourcing company but never actually visited that company. The only building I ever went to was the client company's.

The only reason I went there was to pick up my first check. Apparently the first check needs to be a paper check before direct deposit kicks in. Otherwise, I never would've went there. I haven't even talked to them since then.

The majority of private insurance companies and employers do this already. Mine does. THIS is not the problem with Obamacare. I have plenty of legitimate issues with Obamacare, this is not one of them
