has anyone bought a pocket translator and which are the best

The Lonely Planet translation reference book is best.

We played with an Ectacto Pocket Translator and had fun with it but used my laptop with Promt software more often, during our meeting.

we have been using Prompt and google translate on the laptop...Hopefully my wife is here in January, Her English is not so great, so I am wondering what to buy so if we make trips to the store and so on, so we can speak. when I visit her, she has a 3g card, it works good in her apartment but we never bring her netbook shopping or out with us, I was thinking of what can bridge her limited understanding of English for the first few months she is here, I know she should take ESL classes, but I am thinking short term what is good to have ready for us

YOU

You'll have to be with her as she ventures out into public until she is totally at ease with all. A pocket translator is a poor substitute to an actual guide she is comfortable with.

If she has never been to the US before, there will be a big culture shock of everything, from the smiling greeter at Walmart, to goods being weighed in lbs (pronounced "lubs") to the use of a debit card, to driving a car.

YOU have a lot of work to do. Sleep well now!!!

i know, i am trying to plan ahead, I think the first few months will be very hard on her, I have already found a ruusian store close by, I think we will shop there at first, then we will go to other places, I know for me. the hardest part of visiting her is going out and trying to get my wishes understood, what I want from the store or restaurant, it is better to plan now

Google Translate app for Android (not sure about iPhone) has a pretty nifty "conversation" mode and translations are pretty damn accurate.

Слава Україні!

Ectacto has the best pocket translators in my opinion. I bought one 9 years ago and it worked like a charm. A friend just bought one on sale for his current trip to Ukraine. If you are seeking the small versions you can't really go wrong with Ectacto. Check their web site for current sales. However, if you have a laptop you plan to bring, then a number of software packages are available although Prompt is well probably the most used and known.

I still get reminders from Ectacto about sales and just go one today. You should check out their site now.

You probably want a model that is about 7 by 4 in size that opens with a nice size screen and a key pad with both English and Russian characters. The prices vary from $200 range up to $900. It really depends on your needs and budget. You might try contacting them now and offer about 50% of the price on their web site.

We agree with all here about the pocket translators. My Wife requested I buy another one and she sold

it to her Bosses Wife who was quite interested by our translator. Ectaco are good folks, very helpful.

When you learn more Russian and she learns more English the "peredovchik" will still come in handy

when trying to understand concepts that differ. Sometimes the machine simply cannot find the word

in the dictionary function and then it boils down to using examples. This is one part of our Marriages

that make life more interesting. Don't get frustrated, accept it is part of the fun of learning!

Be aware that the battery's in these units are not cheap. They also tend to run down quickly

so do not leave the machine on all day. The power cube will accept the electric current with an

adaptor for the Russian style electrical plug, so no worries about destroying the unit.

The stylus is handy to use on these. The Russian Lessons are also very useful for you to learn

basics quickly, so it is not only useful for her, but for you also.

Since my Wife lives in a smaller village the Internet service is something less than optimal

or we would have used Google Translate more than we did, but we actually had a lot of fun using

the Ectaco. We own a model 850 for reference.

I paid around $275 from an Evil Bay seller but had to buy a new battery. This was expected

so it was a decent deal.
