POE and 90 day work visa

My fiance just booked his one-way ticket to move over here for January 20, 2007!!! He booked via JFK, even though I live in Chicago, just for the possiblity that he can get that 90 day work visa. How do we go about doing that? What does he ask for, and do they give it to everyone?

It should be standard operating procedure at all POE's but as we are finding out it is not. What he wants is the employment authorization "stamp" (sometimes referred to as the EAD) on his form I-94 "entry/exit" card.

FYI, even if he gets it, he will need a SSN, which can take 3+ weeks! So it's only about 60 days of work to be had.

I went through there last week, and they just stamped me without me asking. I did ask them if they'd done it and he looked at me suspiciously and then showed me. I'm pretty sure you'll be ok! I'm still waiting for my social security number so can't work yet, but we;re about to send of AOS and EAD so maybe, just maybe... there'll be an overlap. But I'm not banking on it!!

Got mine at JFK..they just automatically gave me the stamp...got my ssn one week later and started work one week after that...it can be worth going through JFK just for the stamp.....good luck

Basically, you need to weigh convenience (of straight-through flights to destinations other than JFK) vs "do you want to get the 90-day EAD?". It's worst for Canadian K-1 beneficiaries, who will most likely enter US through a PFI; going to JFK as a POE adds considerable expense (formerly, one could do this by taking a one-way domestic trip to Halifax where now one needs to leave Canada and land in JFK from a third country).
