This question is pretty much directed at those who have been or are military......although feel free to add input anyone.

My husband is active army and has a green passport. Technically he isn't supposed to be in possession of his green passport unless it's "work related". Even though he actually does have possession of his green passport he technically can't use it. We know he will be required to forfeit his passport once he is no longer active in the military, which leads to the question.

How can he have 2 passports when the rules specifically state that you may not have you name appear on more than one passport and if he can't get the 2nd one, then what?

Being that I was in the Military before, actually served in all 3 branches. Never used it in my Army Time. navy time ships office kept them, and if you did use it,they hounded you to return them. As Aircrew on the Cp 140 Aurora, 1 member signed them out for the whole crew, and again were hounded to return them, lol The green passport is a special passport. I know when I did my out routine at CFB Greenwood there was a check box for that. They just ensured they had it (which they did) Wasn't a problem for me. Had to renew my passport over the yrs, was never a problem either.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Yes, had a normal blue passport at the same time. The green one is to be used only on special instances. And once done with it, its suppose to be handed back in for safe keeping. When he gets out, they will (should be) loking to see that he has turned in the Green passport.

the rules they state on the site say you cant have your name on more than 1 passport at a time but there must be exclusions to that rule (obviously)

you're always a great help and source of good info Flames , thanks tons!!!!!

Most likely refering to 2 Blue (normal) passports. There are a variety of passport types out there. At one time in the military we used the green ones a fair bit, but as I recall we switched to the blue ones as well. Was interesting. While in the Navy(west coast), prior to one deplyment, everyone had to get a normal blue passport (even though we had the green ones) Militarty paid for the blue ones as well. BUt on the East coast, they too had to get the blue ones, but came out of their own pocket! lol Governments never cease to amaze ya. Cheers

Don't know too much about the military and passports it has been a very long time since I've been there. I had spent a few years in the forces in Europe and the only place I remember needing a passport was to go to Austria. Here in the Public Service the blue one is exchanged for the green and returned when the green one is.

Something about that rings familiar in the back of my mind. God, getting old and forgetting really sucks!!!!! lololol

I found something about a form that needs to be filled out if your current passport is unaccessible........wonder if it applies in this instance. Guess hubby's gonna find out when he takes his fanny to the passport office tomorrow!!!!!

Also, those particular rules have no meaning for dual citizens who often hold a Canadian (blue) passport and a non-Canadian one.

yeah, technically you're not supposed to travel with more than one passport, but if you're a dual, or treble or whatever national, you almost have to. Like for instance if my Aunt were to travel back to the UK to visit family. She currently lives in the US and is a naturalized US citizen. She might have to get a connecting flight thru Canada, where she grew up, and is also a citizen in order to get to the UK, where she was born, and still is considered a citizen.

When she lands in Canada for the connecting flight, she's Canadian, and would show her Canuck passport. When she gets to the UK, she's British, and would show that passport. When she comes back to the US at the end of her trip, she'd show that passport in order to get back into the country.

And yet legally, she could be hauled in under suspicion of being a spy or terrorist, because she's carrying so many different passports.

But for military, I think the green one is only used on military travel, so they still need the blue one for personal travel. I'd ask James (former USMC) but he's asleep.

Yes the green one is suppose to be used only for official business, once back from the trip, its to be handed back in. US military may be different I travelled alone on times for military business and still used the blue one.

I had both while I was in the miliary. My military passport was brown and my civilian passport was blue. I always had possession of both. When I retired, they invalidated the military passport, but let me keep it.

 because there's lots of flights to UK from US. Going through Canada is only if she wants to do a "combined trip). I remember much discussion about this issue on the Grasmick Forum (specifically whether it would be OK for a TN-1 to visit UK without going through Canada; I actually did such a visit, only glitch was INS officer asking "where's the visa?" when I returned to Atlanta).

When she gets to the UK, she's British, and would show that passport. When she comes back to the US at the end of her trip, she'd show that passport in order to get back into the country.

It may be possible to show US passport for entry to UK (or Canada--my sister does this when visiting Calgary).
