Filed: K-1 Visa Country: England
Timeline

I too used excessbaggage.com and it all went well. Cheaper to book on the phone than at the airport, the guy at Gatwick told us that!

Make sure you have someone to help when they collect, as its CURB to CURB, we lived in a flat, he would help bring the stuff down, he was nice enough, something about insurance.

We spenmt £800 but i fully insured everything, we had 8 very big boxs/t chest size. (insurance was £300 of that)

took about 10 weeks, brighton to Ohio.

As some (but not much!) of the stuff was my Fiances he filled out all the forms in his name, so I dont know about the visa thing. He was living here any way, work sent him back so it wasnt that dodgy!

Everything arrived safe and nothing was damaged. At the other end the delivery driver was more helpful in taking the box's into the house.

I shipped my stuff over way before my visa. Trouble is I shipped all my winter clothes thinking I would be over in September, so I have gradualy extended my wardrobe again! A good excuse for a girl to shop!

Make sure you can live witout anything you ship.

Dont send things that are cheap to buy in US, get a new one!

Mainly send sentimental items, and things you can not replace.

Dont send furniture unless its antique, everything is so much cheaper in the US if it costs £800 to ship a table and chairs you would be able to by a really good one in the US for that, as I say unless its sentimental.

Send lots if little things that make you feel at home right away!

For someone who has been here nearing on 3 years after shipping my stuff, I would warn people to take a serious look at what you think you need to bring over. I shipped 7 big boxes and I would say I have got rid of at least half of what I brought over. What you may think you can't live without is soon forgotten in the back of the cupboard. One box took me six months to even open up. Forget hefting loads of books. I got rid of 100s of books before I came and I still shipped too many. Support your local library -- they have plenty of books!

So, what you may think is precious to you now, and you can't possibly do without, be warned it may be sitting in that thrift store in a year's time and you have spent all that money to ship it over.

Ebay selling and charity shops will be your friend. My Ebay profits paid for my shipping fees.
