Can anyone recommend a company/way to ship your stuff from the UK to the US?

Also, I read in another post that you have to wait untill you have your k3 visa to ship your stuff. Is this true??

Thanks, again!!

Well, whatever type (K-1, K-3, etc) of visa you're getting, it would be a bad idea to ship BEFORE you have it in hand.

I dont know about that.

there is a thread that went into deatail a while back. You might want to "search" for it.

They said 6 weeks for somthing to the west coast and it took 10-12. So, if your sure it is nothing you are going to miss, plan early.

Why would it be a bad idea to ship before hand?

My husband is moving this weekend from his apartment and staying with friends for a bit. Rather than putting things in storage, I thought it best to just ship it to me as we will be living at my place.

Will search for the thread, thanks!

I spoke to my shippers today. They require a copy of the visa to go with the US Customs paperwork.

That is true, you cannot ship your belongings without your visa for customs, we have also been advised the same

Depends how you ship it. I sent my stuff via UPS and didn't need any visa. I stated exactly what was in each box and why I was shipping it, and that was good enough for them. Customs wanted to know when I would be joining my stuff and that form went through easily enough too. I did all this about 4 weeks before coming to the US.

Blimey I didn't know that. I was planning on shipping a whole load of stuff the beginning of December.

Looks like I'm going to be surrounded by Tea Crates until I get that Visa in hand!

Just for reference the best quote I got door to door. London - San Diego was;

Description Quantity Dimensions

3CuFt Carton 6 60 x 41x 34 cms

QUOTATION:

SEAFREIGHT:

Door to Door Service: GBP 332.80

This is with sales@baggage-express.com

6/05/06 - Mailed off the I29f

06/20/06 - Cheque cashed

7/07/06 - Still not received NOA1. Call CSC. They have input our address incorrectly. Give them the correct details. Also find out what our case number is from them so can check for touches!

07/13/06 - Receive RFE

07/26/06 - Email confirmation they have RFE

07/27/06 - Touched

08/23/07 - Call CSC to find out where NOA1 is and what date was on it. As it was sent to the wrong address it came back as undeliverable. They will not send it out again unless we send them a written request. However date was;

06/09/06 - NOA1

09/07/06 - NOA2 email confirmation

09/28/06 - NVC say they have sent details to US Embassy in London

12/09/06 - Sent back packet 3 recorded delivery

10/30/06 - Medical

11/06/06 - Interview confirmed 1st December!

01/17/07 - Wedding booked in Vegas

Not to good with these sizes etc but we have what we feel is an excellent quote for 760 cu ft (we are shipping lots of furniture) we will be taking up a full 20ft container, with a full packing service, door to door, approx 21/28 days and it is costing us £4700.

Considering that some people have paid £600 for a couple of tea chests I definitely think we are on to a winner

we did not need the Visa for the shipping

John & Annie,

Who did you ship through?

Thanks everyone for your input!!

Kristina

Perhaps they shipped the stuff as "property of <USC>". For K-3 (and CR-1/DCF), this would certainly seem a feasible alternative.
