Getting a Drivers Permit

I think I've found this part out at least:

18 and Older―First-time drivers 18 and older are not legally required to complete a driver's education course. However, it's definitely a good idea to take a supplemental course such as the one offered by our sponsor before you take the written test at your SOS facility.

But then how does one get a permit!

Or does someone above the age of 18 not need a permit?

It varies by state. Out here in WA, there are private driver's education courses that adults can attend. If you are under 18, you have to be enrolled in a WA State certified education course to get your "learners permit". If you are over 18, you can get a permit without the course registration. Then, you take an exam and a practical road test and you get your license.

Call the DMV and see what they have to say about Illinois.

I would have him take a course! ESPECIALLY since he has NEVER driven!

That isn't the actually Illinois DOT page. Here is the actual one: http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/

Here is the drivers license page: http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/services/newresidents.html, then to here: http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/drivers/drivers_license/drlicid.html#dlapp .

Basically super simple. ID docs, fee, exams (knowledge, vision etc) and it's done.

I was fooled by the dmv.org site once :S

There's nothing wrong with the dmv site aside from not generally listing up to date info on dmv hours -_-

I cannot find the information on permits on the cyberdrive site and you still have not provided that, sorry.

AH! I found it by searching permit on the first page :P

You must pay the appropriate fee, pass the vision screening and the applicable written exam for the classification you are seeking. Proper identification documents are required.

If you are age 15-17, you must be enrolled in, or 30 days prior to active participation in, an approved driver education class.

Your permit must be used in the behind-the-wheel portion of the driver education class when an adult instructor is sitting beside you.

You also may practice driving with an adult who is at least age 21, has a license for the type of vehicle you are driving, and has at least one year of driving experience.

An applicant under age 18 is issued an instruction permit valid for two years, and the permit must be held for at least nine months prior to obtaining a driver's license. An applicant age 18 and older is issued an instruction permit valid for one year.

If you are age 17 years and 3 months or older, you may apply for a permit without taking a driver education course.

After you have successfully completed the driver education class, you may continue practicing to drive with your instruction permit under the supervision of a responsible adult as outlined above.

If you receive your license prior to the expiration of your instruction permit, you may not be required to pay an additional fee.

Also, yes I am a very good driver. Aside from (1) red light run ticket, that's all I've got going for me in 10 years and I took court supervision on that so it's not even on my record.
